Zoomies might look chaotic, but they’re completely normal.

Also known as FRAPs (frenetic random activity periods), they’re a way for dogs to release pent-up energy or excitement, especially in puppies and younger dogs.

Just make sure they have a safe space to zoom. And if they seem frightened, tense, or distressed rather than playful, it’s worth looking into.

Otherwise, let them zoom!

Puppy socialisation doesn’t stop when the evenings get darker.

Keep introducing your puppy to new experiences calmly and positively, reward relaxed behaviour, and never force them closer if they’re unsure.

Small, positive experiences can make a big difference.

Why does September feel like a flea explosion?

Fleas thrive in warm conditions, and when we turn the heating back on, it can create the ideal environment for flea eggs to hatch indoors.

And here’s the bit many pet parents don’t realise: only around 5% of the flea population is actually on your dog. The rest can be in your home, in carpets, soft furnishings, and other areas where your dog spends time.

That’s why treating your dog alone isn’t enough.

Treat every pet in the household
Vacuum regularly and thoroughly, especially under furniture
Wash your dog’s bedding regularly on a hot wash
Keep up with your monthly flea treatment

Flea control is a whole-home job, not just a dog job.

Shedding more than usual? It may simply be your dog’s seasonal coat doing its thing.

Regular brushing helps prevent the undercoat from matting, keeps their skin comfortable, and lets you spot any new lumps or bumps early.

But if the shedding is patchy or leaving bald spots, that’s not typical molting and is worth having your vet check. A few minutes of brushing each day can make a big difference.

A swollen face after a sting isn’t always an emergency, but it helps to know what to watch for.

Watch for swelling that spreads beyond the sting site, especially around the muzzle or eyes, as well as pale gums, vomiting, weakness, or changes in breathing. If your dog is stung inside the mouth or throat, has multiple stings, or shows signs of a severe reaction, seek urgent veterinary help.

And if you can safely see the stinger, remove it carefully as soon as possible.

Save this for those unexpected moments when you need to know what to look for.

Adder season isn’t over just because summer is ending.

Adders can still be active on warm days before hibernation, especially in heathland, dunes, moorland and long grass.

If your dog is bitten, watch for sudden, painful swelling, especially around the face, neck, or front legs. Symptoms can develop within minutes to an hour.

If you suspect an adder bite:

• Keep your dog calm and carry them to the car if possible
• Call your vet ahead so they can prepare for your arrival
• If safe, take a photo of the snake to help with identification
• Never use a tourniquet or try to remove the venom yourself
• Don’t wait for symptoms to get worse before seeking veterinary care

An adder bite can become serious quickly, so contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has been bitten.

While not every symptom means the worst, it's always safer to have your dog assessed promptly rather than wait to see if things improve.
