As the Scottish exam results have been sent out today, I wanted to share my story, as there’s
I had very little interest in school, I did stay until the end of 6th year, but I took any opportunity I could to not be in school. I passed what I wanted to pass and got great grades in my other classes.
I’ve had many’s a careers come and go through my mind over the years, but my animals have always been my priority when it’s come to making decisions on things like this.
I left for Thurso in 2009 to attend the North Highland College, Thurso - now UHI Thurso. In my time there I achieved a BA in Equine Business Management alongside a variety of life and business skills while working in hospitality and volunteering at the Caithness Riding for the Disabled.
I worked in various sectors of hospitality for 16 years until last year. I enjoyed my time in the industry, I certainly learned a lot during that time and grateful for all the opportunities provided to me.
I always wanted to do something with animals so last year I took the plunge to start Paws & All. For those of you that don’t know I also work part time as a support for learning assistant which I also enjoy. Between both it’s a lovely balance of two things I enjoy.
If I said to myself back in 2009 that I’d have set up my own business I would’ve laughed. There has been a lot of what ifs and questioning myself, but having people feel reassured and seeing the happy faces when I pull in the drive or go through the front door put them all at ease.
Your results don’t make the decision on your career path, you do. There is no shame in changing your choices, whether it be just now or down the line. You also don’t need to rely on grades, there are plenty of practical skill sets that can help you develop into a career.
