These breeds are very rare, and their numbers may shock you!

For context, there were around 30,000 Labradors registered with the Royal Kennel Club last year, here are the figures for the breeds in this video…

1️⃣ Otterhound - there were 38 puppies registered last year

2️⃣ Norwegian Lundehund - usually less than 5 registered each year, mostly imported into the UK rather than bred here

3️⃣ Lancashire Heeler - around 100 registered per year

4️⃣ Smooth Collie - there were 56 puppies registered last year

5️⃣ Irish Water Spaniel - there were 50 puppies registered last year which is the lowest number for 50 years!

Thank you to all of the dogs and owners who allowed me to use their pictures to show off these breeds!

1 Jump, 9 Different cues - Big Dog Edition!

This was really popular when I did it with my spaniel, so I thought I would recreate it with my big dog 🐾

I’ve also put the cues in that I say for those asking - it doesn’t really matter what words you say, I just use these as I’ve picked them up along the way! 💬

Agility requires so many words that hopefully this will give you some verbal cue inspiration 🤭

Can you tell why I released him at the exact moment I did? What did he do that I liked so much? Leave your guess in the comment ⬇️

Session 2 working on “Look” 👀

Criteria here is stare at the object until released, we’ve been working pretty hard on this one recently and I’ve been really enjoying it. It’s a trick/behaviour that requires a lot of balance between excitement and frustration from the handler and recognising this at the right time!

Should we film a tutorial? 📽️

Toy we’re using is from Coachi and I like it because it’s bright and obvious so great for strengthening this skill.

🤯 Some surveys have shown that up to 22% of dogs in rescue last year were Spaniels and Spaniel rescue charities noted that in recent years their intake of Spaniels is threefold - but why is this happening?

We’re seeing a spike of Spaniels in rescue and with behavioural issues - here’s why we think this might be happening…

1 - They’re marketed wrong!

Spaniels are often sold as ‘the perfect family pet’ when in reality, they require a lot of time, work and effort!

2 - Adolescence is difficult!

Spaniels that seem like perfect puppies still have a tricky adolescent phase, that’s where many owners feel stuck.

3 - Owners aren’t asking for help soon enough!

Many owners don’t ask for behaviour help until it’s too late. It is better to start training before there’s a problem than try to fix it later.

4 - Their genetics are being forgotten!

Behaviours that are labelled ‘naughty’ and ‘stubborn’ are what make Spaniels great at working. This should be channeled, not punished or surpressed.

At Perfect Dog Training, we understand Spaniels! Contact us for help and advice!

Tutorial: Teach your dog to ring toilet training bells to let you know when they need to go out 🐾

We’re using Coachi Puppy & Mini Toilet Training bells (ad)

Step 1 - Teach your dog to touch your hand with their nose, this will give them an understanding of the nose touch we want with the bells later.

Step 2 - Hold the bells in your hand and reward a nose touch to the bells.

Step 3 - Hold the bells so they’re hanging above the dog and reward the nose touch.

Step 4 - Hang the bells on a door and reward every time they touch them.

Step 5 - Open the door every time your dog rings the bells so that they associate bell ringing with the door opening.

This is an easy way that your dog can let you know they need to go out!

The look of love 👀❤️

Something I love about this boy is how he always looks at me with so much engagement, ready to work with me!

These are some pictures taken during our seminar at Networking Day - it was a pleasure! Being able to share our passion with other professionals is always so much fun!

🧠 Behaviour time:

Aside from the obvious relaxed body language, how can you tell that this is play rather than aggression? 🤔

For professionals this may be very easy but for dog owners, it can be worrying when your dog has their teeth bared, is growling or is grabbing at their play mate - so how do I know that this is play?

For me, an obvious sign is the sneezing sound you can hear them both doing 👃🏼

This ‘play sneezing’ is a method of communicating that the “fight” is a play fight rather than aggression, like how children may play wrestle with each other. This sound lets them know that everything’s ok and they’re still friends, keeping things friendly. ❤️

In fact, a study in 2017 found that sneezing is an important part of communication in African Wild Dogs while hunting - so we know that dog communication utilises sneezing across the board!
