Can you tell which two dogs are related? 🤎🖤🖤

And yes, we LOVE funky patterned vet bed!

I didn’t realise this until I was editing and watching back - two of them seem to have a very similar method for “off”, adding a little spin - and it happens to be the two who are related. It may be coincidence but it’s so fun to look at these little quirks!

And yes, for the training perfectionists, I could train them out of the little spin and I probably will with puppy at some point, but for now it’s super cute! 🐾

🎆 Fireworks Desensitisation with a puppy - Session 1 🎆

Fireworks are a huge stressor for many dogs, but I’m determined to do everything I can to prevent noise phobias in my dogs. Here’s a look at our first session of desensitising fireworks. You can try this with any age of dog!

A few notes:

- videos won’t provide the exact same noise or vibrations that fireworks do, and you won’t make it as loud but you can build familiarity and that is key! If it’s a noise they already know, it’s not as scary when it’s louder.

- I’m not talking much or cueing any behaviours, I’m just rewarding behaviours he offers. Why? I’m introducing new, potentially stressful sounds. I don’t need to add even more stimulation.

- you can start much lower volume than this if your dog needs, even if it’s barely audible at first, go at your dog’s speed.

Who did it better? 🤎🖤

Sit, Down & Stand ➡️ 10 week old puppy vs 6 year old

Practising changing into and out of positions, practising listening instead of guessing and practising following lures (more so for puppy).

The 6 year old has IVDD and is not even a year post disc extrusion so his form is amazing considering 😍

Puppy is still learning to use his legs of course, they’re growing faster than he can keep up at the moment but he’s trying his best and loves training

Of course there’s not really a comparison here because they’re at very different life stages but it’s cool to see the before and after of training

Wait for the big stretch! 🤣

Some down stays we practised this weekend as a group.

Lando had to add flair with his cross paws because he does that every time he lies down now (it’s a training issue I’ll correct later!) and Axel felt the need for a big stretch mid way but we got there.

Down stays are a great skill to have, but the difficulty increases when you have x3 (I think the expression is herding cats 🤣) - this is also a great bonding exercise for them, showing them that new puppy is part of our family, does the same training and fits in with our usual training.

It’s very important to me that new puppy fits in with training and that they can all focus as a group so this is one of our go-to exercises.

Here I’ve shown you 5 ideas to try to lessen your dog’s anxiety around being handled, groomed and checked at the vet.

Miranda saying this on the Traitors made me think, I’m always convinced that the person may call their dog away, and then they keep approaching!

Obviously this is just a bit of fun, but really, if your dog can’t recall, keep it on lead!

Some weekend training inspiration for you 🐾

Here’s a look at what each of the spaniels is working on at the moment. For all the Max fans, he’s busy working on his Canicross so trick training isn’t on his agenda 🩶

Puppy is working on foundations, down stays, learning markers and release cues - all the fun stuff!

Axel is working super hard on “pull” (he will try anything for that pink bag of treats!)

Lando has been revisiting some foundations, ready for some more complex new tricks, practising holding new objects

Learning ‘Down’ & Release Cues 👌🏻

A few things to note:

- I teach ‘Down’ separately from ‘Sit’. My dogs go straight to lie down from standing, I don’t teach them to sit first. It makes it look prettier 🤭

- ‘Down’ means lie down until released, which is what I’m teaching in the video.

- You’ll notice I’m only giving the ‘Down’ cue once. I don’t want to have to nag my dogs, they need time to process.

He seemed to pick this up nicely and he’s super into training which is great 🤎
