Perfect for puppies aged 9 weeks to 6 months ⭐️

One of the biggest misconceptions about puppy socialisation is that your puppy needs to meet as many dogs and people as possible.

They don’t. 👀

In fact, learning NOT to interact is just as important as learning how to interact.

If every time your puppy sees another dog on a walk they’re allowed to pull over, say hello and have an exciting interaction, what can they start to learn?

🐾 Dog = I get to go and say hello!
🐾 Person = They’re going to give me attention!
🐾 See something exciting = Pull towards it!

And while that might seem harmless with a little puppy, fast forward several months and suddenly you have an adolescent dog who is barking, lunging or dragging you towards another dog because they expect access to them.

That frustration can sometimes look like reactivity when actually your dog is shouting, “BUT I ALWAYS GET TO SAY HELLO!” 😅

On lead greetings can be particularly tricky. The lead restricts movement, dogs can’t always communicate or move away naturally, and if they repeatedly learn that seeing another dog while on lead means interaction, frustration can build when that interaction isn’t possible.

✨ Neutrality is part of socialisation too.

Your puppy should learn that they can…

🐶 See another dog and keep walking
👋 Watch a person pass without saying hello
☕ Sit somewhere while life happens around them
🌳 Explore an environment without interacting with everyone in it
👀 Notice something exciting and then disengage from it
🧠 Choose YOU even when distractions are nearby
