Meet Elodie 💚🐴

Born about 2 weeks ago, Elodie is GGs first foal of the year…actually first foal ever! 🤩 Elodie has given Laura and her owner Jordan a lot of sleepless nights prior to her arrival.
Around day 290 of pregnancy her mum, Katy, started producing a sticky discharge and began to bag up. With these signs Laura was very concerned about the possibility of placentitis, which was confirmed via trans abdominal ultrasound. Mares with placentitis are at higher risk of abortion, red bag and still birth, and foals born to these mares are more likely to be septic and/or become dummy foals. 🤒 Katy was started on a cocktail of drugs 💊 to treat the suspected infection and stop her from delivering her baby too soon.
The discharge stopped almost immediately and Katy’s udder did not continue to grow until nearer to her due date. Just to keep Laura and Jordan on their toes (and deprive them of sleep..) little Elodie arrived 10 days late, but just as the sun began to shine ☀️ Elodie received a short course of antibiotics due to the high risk of her having been born with an infection and her blood was tested to check for full transfer of passive immunity about 18 hours after her first feed 🍼 Both mum and baby have been flourishing since and we can’t wait to follow Elodie’s progress over the next few years 💚
