✨ Quartz Update ✨

Many of you have been asking after Quartz, so I wanted to give you an update.

Yesterday, Quartz underwent surgery to have both of his a**l glands removed. This wasn't a decision I took lightly, but after around five infections in just six years, his condition had become chronic.

Each infection was extremely painful for him. The glands would become swollen, often abscess and eventually burst, causing significant discomfort and tissue damage. With every recurrence, the risk of complications increased, including a higher chance of incontinence and a more challenging surgery in the future.

Because of Quartz's history and the fact that he weighs just 3kg, I wanted him to have the very best care possible. We therefore chose specialist surgeon Catherine Sturgeon from Visiting Vets to perform the procedure at Alder Vets. During surgery, it turned out his a**l glands were the size of a ‘petit pois’ for such a tiny dog!

The good news is that Quartz is now home and recovering well. He's understandably a little grumpy, sore and heavily medicated, but he's resting comfortably and taking everything in his stride.

The next few days will be the most important part of his recovery, so I've taken some time away from work to keep the home quiet and so I can keep a close eye on him and make sure everything heals as it should.

I also want to say a huge thank you to all of my wonderful clients who are waiting for appointments. This unexpected surgery has created a bit of a backlog in my diary, and I truly appreciate your patience, understanding and kind messages while I focus on helping my little man recover.

It is legal in the UK to hit a cat when driving and not need to stop or report collisions, leaving them scared, alone, and in pain. Cats are important, loved, valued family members for many and we believe the law should reflect this.

Flea & Tick Treatments, Bathing & Protecting Our Waterways

Hi everyone

You may have seen recent news coverage following a government press release from the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) regarding the impact flea and tick treatments can have on UK waterways and aquatic wildlife.

As someone who bathes dogs every day, I feel it’s important that I also play a role in helping owners use these products responsibly and safely.

Many spot-on flea and tick treatments contain ingredients that can wash off into drains, rivers and waterways during bathing or swimming. While these treatments are important for protecting our dogs, using them correctly can help reduce environmental contamination.

One of the biggest considerations is timing.

If your dog has recently had a flea or tick treatment applied, it’s really important to allow enough time before bathing, swimming, hydrotherapy or heavy rain exposure. Bathing too soon after application may:

• Reduce the effectiveness of the treatment
• Increase the amount washed into wastewater systems
• Potentially contribute to environmental contamination

Please always follow the manufacturer’s instructions or your vet’s advice, as different products have different guidance. Many spot-on treatments recommend avoiding bathing for a period both before and after application.

As a Dog Groomer working with my clients and our beloved companions, I feel we all share responsibility for protecting both our dogs and the environment around us.

As a groomer, the “Apply” and “Protect” sections are particularly important, as bathing too soon after treatment may affect both the product’s effectiveness and the environment.

When cleaning ears, I only ever clean what I can safely see. The ear ca**l is delicate, and pushing too far inside can actually cause irritation, compact debris deeper, or risk injury.

That’s also why I choose an ear cleaner I trust — one that is gentle, pH balanced and safe should a small amount find its way further into the ear ca**l. Dogs can suddenly shake or move during cleaning, so product safety really matters.

Healthy ears should be approached calmly and gently, never scrubbed aggressively. If I notice redness, swelling, excessive wax, strong odour, pain, or discharge, I always recommend a veterinary check rather than continuing to clean.

Sometimes less is more when it comes to ears 💙
