September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, and this one is very close to home for me. ❤️

Crumpet is one of the biggest reasons pain awareness is such an important part of the way I work as a dog trainer and behaviourist.

As a puppy, she was happy, confident, energetic and completely full of life (she still is). She wanted to play, explore and get involved in absolutely everything. She didn’t look like a dog in pain, and she still doesn’t to the naked eye.

One of the only things that really stood out was her excessive nipping.

At 6 months old, she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. At 12 months, we found an additional vertebra and pseudoarthrosis. At 18 months, she was diagnosed with IVDD.

Those problems didn’t suddenly appear when she was diagnosed. They were already there while she was growing up.

That doesn’t mean every puppy who nips is painful, or every behaviour problem has a medical cause. But it does mean pain should never be dismissed just because a dog is young, energetic, from health-tested parents, or seems physically “fine”.

Research supports this too. Mills et al. (2020) estimated that around 1 in 3 dogs referred for behavioural problems had a painful condition contributing to their presentation, with some behaviour caseloads reporting figures as high as 80%.

Pain can show up as changes in behaviour, frustration, reactivity, difficulty settling, handling sensitivity, equipment avoidance, changes in play, increased mouthing and so much more.

This is why I’m not only interested in asking, “How do we stop this behaviour?”

I want to know why it’s happening.

Sometimes the answer is training. Sometimes it’s fear, frustration, environment or learning history. And sometimes there may be a physical component too.

So if your trainer or behaviourist recommends investigating pain, please don’t dismiss it because your dog is “too young” or “doesn’t look in pain”.

Investigating pain doesn’t mean we’re saying it’s definitely the cause.

It means we’re making sure we’re not missing an important piece of the puzzle 🐾

I’M GOING TO UNI! 🎓🥹

After a very chaotic and stressful few months, apparently my idea of taking it easy is starting university 😂

I’ve always wanted to do a degree, but life just didn’t take me down that path when I was younger. Growing up was incredibly tough, and after leaving school I spent several years simply struggling to find my feet. University never felt like something that was realistically within reach for me.

Now, 10 years after I would have usually started university, I’ve officially been accepted onto a BA (Hons) Marketing & Social Media degree! 🫶🏻

I don’t have any A-levels, so being accepted based on everything I’ve achieved and built since leaving school makes me incredibly proud. I’ve grown two businesses from scratch, discovered a genuine love for marketing and content creation, and created opportunities for myself that my younger self could never have imagined.

And for once, I’ll be studying something that isn’t dog related! 😂 Although knowing me, I’ll still manage to make most of my assignments about dogs somehow!

For my lovely Bubba’s clients, nothing is changing! I’ll still be offering both in-person and virtual training as usual. I may just work slightly different days depending on my timetable.

It might not have happened at 18, but at 28 I’m finally doing something I’ve wanted for such a long time. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m very excited for this next chapter! 🎓🐾

Things you’ll never hear me say as a dog trainer and behaviourist 👀

❌ “They’re just being stubborn.”
❌ “You need to show them who’s boss.”
❌ “Just let them get on with it.”
❌ “Tell them off if they growl.”
❌ “They’re too young to be in pain.”
❌ “Only feed them during training.”

Dog training should never come at the expense of a dog’s physical or emotional wellbeing.

Behaviour is communication. Rather than labelling a dog as naughty, stubborn or dominant, we need to look at why the behaviour is happening and what they may be struggling to communicate.

That means listening to their warnings, considering pain and discomfort, meeting their basic needs and helping them learn without fear, force or intimidation.

Your dog doesn’t need to be controlled or “put in their place.” They need to feel safe, understood and supported by the people around them 🫶🏻

If you need ethical, individual support with your dog’s training or behaviour, send me a message to find out how we can work together. In-person sessions are available across Merseyside, with virtual support available throughout the UK 📱

Little Hugo didn’t choose to be bred in bulk, shipped across the water, and sold like retail stock — but he’s the one now facing £𝟭𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 worth of surgery just to have a pain‑free future.

𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀 in sells puppies bred in 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 at their Northern Ireland breeding establishment — a supply chain long linked to industrial‑scale puppy farming, including the notorious Fivemiletown operation run by the Hamilton brothers.

High‑volume breeding means high‑risk puppies.

And when they break, Kelly’s Kennels is nowhere to be seen.

Hugo is barely a year old and already suffering from 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗯 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆, a condition with a 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁. His bones have grown at abnormal angles, leaving him in pain and needing specialist surgery to realign both front legs with plates and screws.

If you’ve bought a puppy from 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀, a large‑scale breeder, or a third‑party seller and later faced health or welfare problems, Warrington Animal Welfare wants to hear from you.

Hugo deserves better than the system that produced him.
Let’s get him the care he needs now.
