We often hear people say, “you get the dog you need.”
But I think sometimes we forget the other side of that.
Sometimes the dog gets the human they need.
The reactive dog who needs somebody willing to learn.
The anxious dog who needs somebody patient.
The medically complex dog who needs somebody prepared to advocate, adapt and keep searching for answers.
The dog in pain who needs somebody to notice the subtle signs.
The dog who struggles with the world and needs somebody willing to see things from their perspective.
Not every dog is easy.
Not every journey looks like we imagined it would.
But our dogs don’t owe us convenience.
When we welcome them into our lives, we take on the responsibility of meeting their needs, even when that means changing our expectations, routines, priorities or understanding of what dog ownership looks like.
The truth is that some dogs require us to grow.
To learn more.
To be more patient.
To become stronger advocates.
To show up for them in ways we never expected.
And while that journey can be exhausting at times, it’s also one of the greatest acts of love we can offer them.
So if you’re navigating behavioural challenges, health issues, chronic pain, disability, fear, anxiety or setbacks right now, please remember this:
Your dog isn’t looking for perfection.
They’re looking for somebody who won’t give up on them.
And maybe that’s exactly why they found you. ❤️
