So what’s the deal about ADDITIVES or PRESERVATIVES?
While these aren’t all bad, the majority are!
Generally speaking, artificial additives and chemical preservatives are not good for dogs.
While they are widely used in commercial pet foods to extend shelf life, enhance color, or artificially boost flavor, many can trigger ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS particularly with long term exposure!!
Commercial treats often use chemical preservatives to prevent fats from going rancid. The most concerning ones include:
BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene): These are synthetic antioxidants used to preserve fats!! They have been flagged in various studies as suspected CARCINOGENS (cancer-causing agents) and can disrupt endocrine function.
Ethoxyquin: Originally developed as a pesticide and rubber stabilizer, this is sometimes found in pet products (often indirectly through fish meals). It can place a heavy burden on a dog’s liver and kidneys.
Propylene Glycol: Often used in semi-moist treats to keep them chewy and retain moisture. While approved in small amounts for dogs, it is chemically related to ANTIFREEZE and is toxic to cats.
ARTIFICIAL COLOURS and FLAVOURS
Synthetic Dyes (e.g., Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2): Dogs are color-blind and do not care what color their treats are—food dyes are added purely to appeal to HUMAN buyers. Some artificial colorings have been linked to ALLERGIC REACTIONS and hyperactivity.
ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS Enhancers: Cheap chemicals used to make low-quality ingredients TASTE APPEALING to your dog can often trigger food sensitivities, skin itching, or digestive upset.
Potential Health Concerns
Allergies and Sensitivities: Additives are a frequent culprit behind CHRONIC SKIN IRRITATIONS of the paws, ear infections, and digestive issues like gas or LOOSE STOOLS!!
Organ Stress: Because preservatives are synthetic chemicals, a dog’s liver and kidneys have to work harder to filter and detoxify them from the body over time.
