Our ophthalmology service opened in July, so this is an update on how the first two months have gone 👀
Georgie saw well over 40 patients in July alone, including eye tests, five surgeries and our first ERG at Granta, a test that measures how the retina responds to light.
A couple of cases stood out. Eddie arrived with sudden blindness. Investigation found disease behind his left eye, and along the way it became clear that his right eye had lost its sight some time before. He had adapted so completely that nobody had realised until the second eye lost sight too. Our neurology team worked alongside Georgie to help Eddie start the right treatment, and we’re pleased to report that he has adapted brilliantly and is doing really well at home.
Another dog came to us with surgery expected. He was holding his eyes shut so tightly that he was bumping into things. Our team were able to treat him medically instead and, he went home seeing again and much happier for it, with no operation needed.
Not every patient came in through the referral list though. Our favourite office dog, Tank, turned up with a case of allergic conjunctivitis, spotted while he was supervising from the desk 🐾
We also held our first puppy eye clinic, which is there for owners who want their puppy's eyes checked early. Nobody minded the armful of collie puppies in reception either. If early eye testing would be useful for yours, your vet can refer you to us.
