Five of our team will be doing the talking at The London Vet Show next month 🐾

Instead of seeing patients for two days, they’ll be teaching vets and nurses from practices across the country.

Helen Silver MacMahon, our Operations and Culture Lead, is sharing practical ways for busy vets to stay on top of their time (we’ve asked for a copy of her notes). Jane Ladlow, our Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, is talking to emergency vets about flat faced breeds like pugs and French bulldogs and how to assess their breathing. Freddie Corletto, Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, is answering vets’ and nurses’ questions on anaesthesia and pain relief, twice. Laura George, Veterinary Technician Specialist , is looking at how to keep a close eye on poorly patients on the ward, especially the ones who seem stable and Rob Foale, Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, is on a roundtable about long term tummy troubles.

Bonfire Night is two weeks today. If your dog or cat spends it shaking behind the sofa, now is the time to plan 🐾

Noise fear is common in both dogs and cats, and a bit of preparation over the next fortnight can make the whole season easier.

Start with a den. A covered crate or a corner with their bed and a blanket over the top gives them somewhere to go that they choose themselves. Walk dogs earlier in the day, before the fireworks start, and keep them on a lead in case of a sudden bang. Cats are safer inside after dark, with a litter tray and their usual hiding spots to hand. Closing the curtains and putting the TV or radio on helps soften the noise, and it is worth checking their microchip details are up to date in case anyone does bolt.

If they come to you for comfort, give it. Being kind to a frightened animal will not make the fear worse.

Most of all, talk to your own vet now rather than on 4 November. Some of the options for noise fear take a while to start working, so the earlier that conversation happens, the more choice you have 💙

Know an orthopaedic surgeon who’s happy to turn their hand to soft tissue too? 🐾

We’re looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join our surgical team at Granta Veterinary Specialists in Linton, near Cambridge. Orthopaedics is the focus, with soft tissue in the mix. They’d join three surgeons, with Specialist colleagues in neurology, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, cardiology and dermatology all under one roof. It’s a full time role worked over four days.

When most people are heading home for the evening, Mel's shift is just getting going 🌙

Mel Thomason RVN has been a veterinary nurse for 32 years and works nights at Granta, looking after our inpatients overnight.

Nights on the ward are kept calm on purpose, with dimmed lights and low voices so patients can rest as much as possible. Mel spends the hours monitoring for changes in vitals, pain, mood and appetite, giving medications and helping the vets with any emergencies that come in.

Ask her about the best bit and she will tell you it is the small signs a patient is on the mend. "It may be a dog wagging its tail or a cat eating a bit of fish, something to show they are feeling better."

Off duty you will find her walking her dogs, at a concert, in the garden or volunteering for a few charities.

If your pet ever stays the night with us, Mel is one of the people keeping an eye on them 💙

Congratulations to Laura George, one of our RVNs, who is now a RECOVER Certified BLS/ALS Rescuer 💙

RECOVER is an internationally recognised non-profit that sets evidence based guidelines for CPR in dogs and cats, with the aim of standardising veterinary CPR. BLS stands for basic life support, which covers chest compressions and ventilation. ALS is advanced life support and covers the next steps after BLS, including emergency drug administration.

Laura will be coordinating our in house CPR training, making sure all colleagues receive current and regular training.

As Laura puts it, “CPR training is always something we hope we never have to use, but sadly these situations do occur and it is so important that all team members involved can perform CPR effectively for the best chance at a positive outcome.”

Well done Laura, we are very grateful to have your expertise at Granta! 🐾

Our RVNs are back from BVNA (The British Veterinary Nursing Association) Congress with notebooks full of ideas and a soft spot for one very friendly ginger cat 🐾🐈

Kayleigh and Emma spent the weekend at the British Veterinary Nursing Association’s yearly congress, catching up with old friends and meeting nurses from practices all over the country. They also made time for the charity stands to hear about the work going on there.

The talks they had been most looking forward to lived up to it. One looked at how a flat face changes the way breeds like pugs and French bulldogs communicate, and how that can make their signals harder for people and other animals to read. Another covered how nurses care for patients with sepsis, where the body’s response to an infection starts to cause harm of its own.

The ginger kitten in our photos was 20 weeks old and out on a socialisation trip, which is a very sensible way to spend a weekend we think!

Kayleigh came home with plenty to think about, and a good feeling about how much of it already happens here at Granta. In her words, ‘the theme of congress this year was compassion and empathy and it was great to take a step away from the clinic and reflect on these as being intrinsic parts of the way Granta runs already, for us as colleagues, for our clients and our patients.’ 💙

Our team is heading to The London Vet Show at ExCeL London on 19 and 20 November. It's two days of learning, catching up with friends from practices around the country and seeing what's new in veterinary care.

We're very excited about what we’re bringing this year, but keeping it under wraps for now. More very soon!

Today is World Mental Health Day, so we are taking a moment to talk about the people who look after your pets 💙

Working in veterinary medicine is incredibly rewarding, and it can also be challenging.

Behind every consultation, procedure, phone call and overnight stay are people who care deeply about the animals entrusted to them. That care is one of the things that makes our profession so special. The emotional demands and pressures of veterinary work can also take their toll.
Research published in the Veterinary Record found that vets are around four times as likely as the general population to die by su***de, so as a profession we still have lots of work to do.

At Granta Veterinary Specialists, we believe looking after people is an important part of looking after patients. We want to keep building a workplace where people feel supported and comfortable asking for help when they are struggling.

This World Mental Health Day, we also want to recognise the important work of Vetlife, an independent charity providing free and confidential support to the UK veterinary community. Two of our nurses are off on a trip this weekend 🎒

Kayleigh and Emma are heading to BVNA (The British Veterinary Nursing Association) Congress, the British Veterinary Nursing Association's yearly gathering, from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October. This year's theme is compassion and empathy and the talks cover everything from caring for very sick patients to physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

They're especially looking forward to one on how a flat face affects the way breeds like pugs and French bulldogs behave and communicate and conversations about kind workplace cultures.
They have promised to bring back notes, not just free pens! 🐾

Last week our oncology specialist Ed Bellamy hosted local vets at Granta Veterinary Specialists to talk through the latest in cancer care for pets. Sharing what we know means more pets get the right care sooner, wherever they're first seen.
