Our hooded vulture chick has now left the nest, fully fledged and independent. Hooded vultures are classified as critically endangered by the IUCN and already extinct in some of their original range. Our birds are part of a EUROPEAN BREEDING PROGRAMME providing a safety net and aimed at saving them from total extinction. This is the sixth chick hatched at Linton.
In the wild they have experienced an extremely rapid population reduction for a number of reasons. This includes indiscriminate poisoning, illegal killing for trade in body parts for traditional belief based medicine with demand being greatest in Nigeria, collision and electrocution with energy infrastructure, habitat loss and degradation and destruction of suitable nest sites.
We are proud to be working with the Horstmann Trust with this amazing species, where in a few weeks time this youngster will be leaving us to join a mate of a similar age.

Have you ever seen egg shells in the middle of no where and wondered where they have come from?
Interesting fact: Many bird species move their hatched egg shells, like this pigeon egg, away from their nest to decrease the possibility of a predator finding the hatchlings. This one is in our our tapir paddock.

Thank you for all the support shown through visits to us this summer holidays, we’ve all had a fabulous time sharing information about our amazing animal family, welcoming familiar faces and lots of new ones too😃.
