A very proud dog trainer moment! 💙

Fender’s journey is a fantastic example of what patience, understanding and positive, reward-based training can achieve.

Seeing him confidently take part in such a special day, whilst making his own choices and taking breaks when needed, is a huge achievement.

I’m incredibly proud of Fender and his family for all their hard work and dedication.

Building confidence, trust and giving dogs choice. That’s what it’s all about! 🐾

Sometimes, dogs just know…

I’ve had some difficult news recently, and it’s been a tough few days.

But through it all, my little mate has barely left my side.

Whether I’m sitting at my desk, relaxing on the sofa or just having a quiet moment, he’s there. No expectations, no demands, just quietly keeping me company.

As a dog trainer, I spend so much time understanding dogs, their behaviour and the incredible bonds we build with them.

But sometimes it’s the simplest things that remind us just how special they are.

I don’t know whether he understands what I’m going through, but somehow he seems to know when I need him most.

Sometimes you don’t need words, advice or answers. Just a dog by your side.

And right now, that means more than he will ever know.

Four Dogs, Different Personalities, One Goal – Happy, Confident Dogs!

What a fantastic week of training at Andy Garner Dog Training.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with these four lovely dogs, focusing on a mixture of loose lead walking, recall and building engagement.

Different breeds, different personalities and different challenges which is exactly why I love what I do!

Loose lead walking building connection and teamwork so walks become enjoyable for both ends of the lead.

Recall making coming back to their owners rewarding, reliable and fun!

The common theme? Positive, reward-based training, working at each dog’s individual pace, celebrating the small wins and making learning enjoyable.

And as you can see from the photos, there’s always time for a bit of fun!

A big well done to all four dogs and their owners for their hard work this week!

Because great dog training isn’t about control ,it’s about communication, trust and teamwork.

Loose lead walking isn’t about making your dog walk perfectly at heel. It’s about building connection, communication and teamwork.

Sunday was a CPD day for me — completing my Canine First Aid Level 2 training.

For me, being a dog trainer isn’t just about training dogs.
It’s also about continually developing my knowledge and making sure I’m prepared to support the safety and welfare of the dogs in my care.

Ongoing professional development helps me improve the service I offer my clients and ensures that welfare remains at the heart of everything I do.

Courses like canine first aid are valuable for dog owners too. Knowing what to do in an emergency, and how to respond until veterinary help is available, could make a real difference when your dog needs you most.

Definitely something I’d encourage every dog owner to consider.

Loose lead waking…

Loose lead walking isn’t about constantly correcting a dog for pulling.

It’s about teaching the dog what we want them to do and building the behaviour gradually.

These two videos show exactly what I mean.

In the first video it is a new client with his dog Benji and we start in a relatively quiet, low distraction environment, where the dog has a better opportunity to engage, learn and succeed.
As you can see for a first lesson he smashed it!

In the second video , we see Dora and my client on their 3rd lesson where we have taken the skills into a much more challenging environment, the common, with other dogs, horses, people, smells and plenty going on around us.

The important part is that we don’t expect a dog to go straight into a highly distracting environment and perform perfectly.

We build the foundations first.

I use changes of direction, changes of pace, engagement and rewards to help the dog learn that staying connected with the person at the other end of the lead is worthwhile.

As the dog becomes more confident and successful, we can gradually increase the distractions.

Start where the dog can succeed.
Build the behaviour.
Then increase the challenge.

That’s positive, reward-based training in practise!

Positive training — Building Engagement

Before we ask a dog to walk nicely, come back when called or cope around distractions, we need something very important,Communication.

That’s why I often start with simple exercises such as Hand Touch, Look at Me and rewarding voluntary check-ins.

These aren’t just tricks. They teach the dog that paying attention to their owner is worthwhile.

Short, enjoyable sessions help build:

•Confidence
•Communication
•Focus
•Trust

Positive, reward-based training isn’t about forcing a dog to comply.
It’s about helping them understand what we’re asking and rewarding the behaviours we want to see more often.

Training built on trust, play, and positive methods.
