This is a total game changer! We can now use our grey water to water the garden!

All we need to do is put the plug in the bath whenever anyone has a shower then drop the waterbutt pump in and away we go!

I'll still need to lug watering cans of fresh water around for the veg beds but this will make a significant difference and saves a lot of water.

Now is not the time to give up. This bed was depleted and hydrophobic two days ago. Everything I'd sown from seed that was destined for this bed was lost to the heatwaves - both from exposure but also because I couldn't find a good moment to plant them on. So I left the bed empty - mistake.

But now, thanks to Rocket Gardens I'm having another go before the end of summer. I've rejuvenated the soil and planted out plug plants of leeks, carrots, kale and cabbage.

I've oversown with clover to act as a living mulch, which I'll later chop down both to feed my rabbits and feed the soil. I saw an example of this at Eden Project | Cornwall, UK last week and figured it's worth giving ago.

In another bed I've harvested carrots and shallots, and now sown dwarf French beans, spring onions, chard, cos lettuce and rocket.

Next I'll sow some lettuces in modules to go into the greenhouse when it is cooler.

Ooh - and I've sown seed potatoes for Christmas! They're in grow sacks outdoors but will move into the greenhouse when the season turns.

Relentless heatwaves can make you feel hopeless and fatalistic, but writing things off and starting again with what you can brings hope.

Today, I harvested some carrots and shallots then reset most of the bed for end of summer sowings. I've got dwarf French beans, spring onions, chard, kohlrabi, cos lettuce and rocket in here now.

I had three small olla pots doing nothing in the garage so I soaked them in a bucket of water before burying them in between the rows of lettuce and rocket. I'm keen to see what difference they might make before I add more next year.

Sowing in the middle of a heatwave isn't ideal but when are we ever out of a heatwave for long? I can't wait for the right conditions, hence adding shade.

Perfectly Imperfect
Two of our babies have notched ear tips from overgrooming at birth. They are otherwise absolutely fine, however, we have adjusted the price accordingly.

We are passionate about our pure bred English angora rabbits. We breed for health, wool quality and temperament. They make excellent pets for both family homes and fibre enthusiasts, and will happily sit to be groomed and cuddled. Anyone looking for an affectionate companion will love angoras - they are extremely puppy-like!

Angora rabbits are a heritage breed - one of the oldest domestic breeds - and known for their long, woolly fur. It's unsurprising that they need more grooming than the average rabbit. Brushing and trimming is an important part of their welfare, as is providing a clean and dry environment. We are very happy to answer questions on how to look after, house and groom your new bunny. Felicity has become quite the entrepreneur. She's crocheted lots of incredible things to sell at her school's summer fayre. All proceeds go back into the school but it's got Felicity thinking about where she might take her crochet next.

What do you mean mealworm farming can't be fancy?

I've been looking for ways to improve our mealworm set-up for this year to reduce faff. I will no doubt develop this further as I need to scale up, but for now, I think this works.

I've looked at lots of different examples, both homemade and (very expensive) purpose built units, and the principles are the same.

So, I'm using a spoon dish as the grub tray (it even has a handy little lip for the beetles to crawl off from) sat on top on a tiny glass jar, weighed down with oyster shells for stability. This will stop the beetles from crawling back up and eating the grubs.

The whole thing is sat in a perforated drip tray. This way, the eggs can fall through to the box below and the beetles can be moved easily to a new box in a few weeks.

We've made a good start on the garden for spring, which has made our robin pair quite bold; they've learnt that humans mean easy access to grubs. Hopefully we'll have them tame enough to eat straight from our hands soon.
