♥️ World Heart Day ♥️

Today is world heart day!

A healthy heart is so important for a healthy, happy pet. Often the signs of heart disease can start out very subtle, but learning the 'normal' for your pet is helpful to pick up on changes more quickly 🫀

Symptoms of heart disease in dogs include:
❣️Exercise intolerance/lethargy
❣️Non productive cough
❣️Excessive panting and increased respiratory rate at rest
❣️Generalised weight loss
❣️Collapse/fainting

Cats with heart disease can be harder to spot 🐱

Their symptoms include :
❣️Lethargy
❣️Increased respiratory rate
❣️Reduced appetite and weight loss

Some animals with heart disease will develop a murmur, which can be heard with a stethoscope, but in certain cardiac diseases this isn't the case and therefore noticing changes in your pet's overall health can be really important in picking up an issue 🩺

Although the majority of heart conditions are not curable, they can be very well managed with medication 💊

🌍 World rabies day 🌍

Today is World Rabies Day!

The disease has a devastating effect worldwide, though luckily the UK is rabies free 🙌🏼

People travelling abroad with their pets will know they must be vaccinated against rabies and this will also be a requirement for those entering the UK from other countries where the disease is found 💉

99% of rabies infections in people come from dog bites. In countries where rabies is common, there is often a large population of stray dogs 🐕

Projects like 'Mission rabies' aim to reduce the spread of the disease through vaccination of both dogs and people, but also to educate people on how to avoid getting bitten 👩🏼‍🏫

Vaccinating dogs and cats for travel is straightforward. One single rabies vaccination is given and will be valid for travel 21 days after injection. The immunity lasts for 3 years 💉

Tess and the nuisance nectarine stone 🍑

Tess thought it would be a good idea to get her paws on a nectarine stone, and swallow it! Following vet Abi’s examination, and her owners description of the stone size, a decision was made to remove the stone from her stomach, as the risk of it getting stuck in her intestine was quite high 👩🏼‍⚕️

Initially, Tess was given an injection to make her sick. Feeling rather sorry for herself, and a couple of rounds of vomit later, unfortunately she didn’t vomit up the stone 💉

We moved onto Plan B, remove the stone through the use of endoscopy. Tess went under a full general anaesthetic for this. Following some careful guidance and a lot of hands on deck from the nurses, vet Abi successfully removed the stone using the endoscope 🌟

Great result all round! Now Tess, no more nectarines for you!!

📍Microchipping📍

Microchipping cats and dogs has had a very positive impact on identifying, tracing and reuniting animals with their owners over the years 🐈

Not only is it a unique identification to each animal but it provides the contact information of their registered owner 📝

It is a legal requirement for ALL dogs to be microchipped by 8 weeks of age 🐕 and pet cats by 20 weeks of age 🐈‍⬛

With puppies; generally they are chipped at their first vaccination at 8 weeks old, but some breeders will have them chipped with the rest of their litter 🐶

Kittens are often left until they are neutered, though they too can be chipped at the time of vaccination 🐱

The fee for a microchip to be implanted and registered with Mortimer Vets is £22.06 💰
