As always, we are incredibly proud supporters of Acorns Children’s Hospice, so we thought we’d kick off a little fundraiser in the best way we know how… dog grooming style! ✂️🐶❤️

Well… kind of. 😂

To be in with a chance of winning, all you need to do is purchase a raffle ticket for £5. Tickets are cash only, simply because it makes it much easier for us to hand every penny raised straight over to the wonderful team at Acorns.

The winning groom will take place on 17th December 2026 ONLY — our final working day of 2026 and, as you can imagine, a date that is already in VERY high demand!

One lucky pooch will receive a full groom completely free of charge. Our usual humanity over vanity approach and de-matting policy will still apply, because your dog’s comfort will always come first.

Acorns isn’t simply a charity whose logo we display or a cause we’ve chosen at random. Our son and grandson receives care from this wonderful hospice, so we know first-hand just how important their work is.

Without them, life could be an incredibly lonely place.

They are a pillar of strength, reassurance and support to families navigating circumstances they never imagined they would face. No family ever wants to need a children’s hospice, and we certainly never imagined that one would become part of our own lives. But it has — and we are endlessly grateful that Acorns is there when we need them.

They provide so much more than care. They provide respite, understanding, precious memories and people who simply get it when the world outside sometimes doesn’t.

TEDDY! 🐾🤎

This gorgeous fella came in for a good old-fashioned hand strip — and at first, we weren’t entirely convinced much was coming off… until we looked down at the half-time mountain of hair! 😂

Teddy also happened to be with us while our telephone decided to play games and give up on life. 📞🙄 Cue the engineer arriving, who we think was slightly sceptical about entering a dog grooming salon…

Well, Teddy soon put him at ease. The pair formed quite the bromance, and we now have a funny feeling our wonderful engineer is at home Googling “Border Terriers needing homes”. 😂🐶

Of course, should one mysteriously appear in his life, he now knows exactly where to bring it for a groom!

Well done, Teddy — your commission for converting another human to the Border Terrier fan club will be paid promptly in dog treats and butt scratches. 🤎🐾

If Connie was human, she’d be the kind of woman every man wants and every woman wants to be. 😂

Pretty, calm, quietly confident… but you KNOW she’s there. Her aura fills the room with absolutely minimum effort. ✨

This little cutie pie came in for a clip-off and enjoyed the full works — honey & coconut shampoo, a camomile facial, nails clipped, ears cleaned, a full clip-off and a little tidy of those gorgeous ears and tail.

And she dealt with it all in true Connie fashion — with grace, decorum and not a single unnecessary ounce of drama. 👑

She’s an absolute beauty, inside and out, and has well and truly earned herself a special little place in our hearts.

Stay classy, Connie. You make it look effortless. 🖤🐾

AKA Mum, Nanna and our Salon Queen. 👑🐾

Because Caroline is wonderfully old-fashioned, she handed the socials over to me (Keri)… but clearly didn’t consider that I’d use this power to embarrass her at every opportunity. And a birthday is far too good an opportunity to miss. 😂

So, what does your groomer get up to outside the salon? A whole lot of gin, more countries than we can count, more festival tickets than the Rolling Stones and a fancy-dress collection a West End theatre would envy. 🍸✈️🎪

🐾 Hand Stripping — Here’s the Breakdown!

We often talk about hand stripping, and for good reason! It’s a skilled, time-consuming method of grooming, but one we absolutely adore because the finished result can be simply fantastic. ❤️

Rather than clipping the coat, hand stripping removes the dead outer hairs from the root, helping maintain the natural colour, texture and character of a wire coat.

Thinking about having your dog hand stripped? Get in touch! We’re always happy to talk you through the process and can even show you in person what we’d expect your dog’s coat to look and feel like.

It’s worth remembering that hand stripping isn’t suitable for every dog or every coat. Dogs that have been regularly clipped may have a softer or altered coat that doesn’t strip as readily. Hormonal changes following neutering can also change the texture and growth of the coat in some dogs. And as our pooches get older, their skin and coat can become more sensitive, so comfort will always come before maintaining a particular grooming style.

Every dog is different, so we assess the coat, the skin and most importantly, the dog in front of us. 🐾

Because as always… humanity over vanity.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! 🐾✂️

When it comes to Poodle crosses — and other breeds where we’re creating a fuller, fluffier finish, such as Airedales, Bichons and some spaniel styles — you might be surprised to know that the actual clipping and styling often isn’t the most time-consuming part of the groom!

It’s all in the prep. 👏

After our consultation, we:

🐾 Wash & condition the coat using products suited to your dog.

🐾 Dry to just the right point — there’s a sweet spot! Too wet and we can’t fluff dry efficiently; too dry and the natural curls begin to set back into the coat.

🐾 Fluff dry — working through the coat section by section, we brush while drying to create an even, fluffy finish ready for clipping and styling

🐾 Comb from skin to tip — the entire coat is checked to make sure it’s completely mat and tangle free.

🐾 Do the important bits — nails, ears and sanitary areas are taken care of too (although the order may change depending on what your pooch thinks of our plans! 😂).

Then we clip and style. ✂️

A beautifully prepared coat allows our clippers and scissors to glide through evenly, helping us create a smoother, neater and more balanced finish.

So when your pooch is on the table looking gloriously fluffy before we’ve even started the haircut… a lot of the hard work has already happened! ❤️🐾

🐾 LET’S TALK HARNESSES! 🐾

Harnesses are fantastic, but we quite often see them contributing to those pesky little matts — especially on our longer, fluffy or curly-coated pooches! 🐶

Why? Because wherever the harness sits, you’ve got friction + movement + coat = the perfect recipe for tangles! 🙈

If your pooch wears a harness for their daily jollies, pay a little extra attention when brushing to those main touch points — around the chest, armpits, shoulders and wherever the straps sit.

And remember, brushing over the top can make everything look beautifully fluffy while hiding little matts underneath. Make sure you’re brushing from the skin right through to the ends of the coat, section by section. A comb through afterwards is a great way to check you haven’t missed any sneaky tangles. ✨
