“He’s perfect at home but completely ignores me outside.”

It’s one of the most common things I hear from owners.

The truth is that your dog isn’t trying to annoy you. Outside is simply much more difficult than your living room.

Training isn’t about testing what your dog knows. It’s about teaching them how to succeed in gradually more challenging environments while keeping it positive and clear.

If your dog struggles to listen outside, don’t worry. It’s usually a training and expectations problem, not a stubbornness problem.

Ever played hide and seek with your dog? 👀

This is one of my favourite games because it teaches your dog to keep track of you, encourages them to use their nose, and builds a habit of checking in without constantly being called.

You are also building on your dog choosing you and loving to interact with you outside on your walks!

Here’s how to play:

🐾 Wait until your dog is distracted or has wandered a little way ahead.

🐾 Quietly step behind a tree, hedge, gate, or anything that hides you from view.

🐾 Either call their name once or simply wait for them to realise you’re missing.

🐾 Let them search for you. Don’t rush to help. Give them time to use their nose and figure it out.

🐾 The moment they find you, make a big fuss of them. Praise, play, treats, whatever your dog loves most.

If they walk straight past without noticing you, stay quiet and let them keep working. The goal is for them to solve the puzzle themselves.

The more you play this game, the more your dog learns to check where you are and keep you in mind during walks.

I always say you want a dog that keeps an eye on you, not a human constantly keeping an eye on their dog. 🐶

This week has been a blast. From helping dogs with reactivity issues, pulling on the lead, my advanced classes doing a down stay in the rain with all the dogs being absolute angels, to our intermediate graduates.

All of these dogs and their owners make me love what I do. 🐾🌸
