Today we entered a tournament, went with the intention of playing for the win.

And only when we got there we found out it was a non competitive tournament. But the focus didn't change. We played against some division 1 and 2 teams and fought hard for everything.

One goal conceded, we stayed undefeated!

Really proud of the boys, their character, determination and grit.

On to the next one!

Today we took AFC Dunstable Navy U8 to the Stoke Hammond Tournament.

Conceding only 1 goal, all tournament 👏🏻
1 sub, no guest players 👀
Long day in the sun, but worth it in the end!

People only see 60 minutes on a match day.
They don’t see the hours behind it. ⚽🌧️

The planning.
The pressure.
The messages.
The support.
The sacrifices.

Grassroots coaches give their time, energy and passion to help kids grow — on and off the pitch.

Not for recognition.
For the kids. 🖤💛

Wins are special. Finals are special. Trophies are special.

But nothing compares to watching a group of U8s — and even an U7 — step into an Under 9 tournament and compete without fear.

Against bigger players. Faster games. More physical battles. More pressure.

Yet these boys never once looked phased.
They showed bravery, character, teamwork and belief from the very first whistle to the very last. Reaching the final while only conceding 3 goals throughout the entire tournament says everything about this group.

To lose the final 1-0 in the closing minutes hurts… But this was far bigger than a result. This was growth. This was development. This was young players proving to themselves that heart, courage and mentality can match anyone.

Couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them.
The future is exciting. 💙⚽

We have been working on some combination skills in our Friday session.

Step Over - Exit - Ronaldo Chop

Over the last couple of weeks Ellis has really locked in and is finding confidence to try new things. This combination was given to him today and executed first time!

What is winning to you?

Is it the scoreline at full time?
Or the development along the way?

This weekend my team lost, but I've never seen them battle so hard all season, from the press to the quicker set pieces. I saw a win today regardless of the scoreline.

Scoreboards reset every week.
Development lasts a lifetime.

So ask yourself…
What does winning really mean? ⚽️📈

Win the game but not try hard?
OR
Lose but give 100% effort?

At this age… The answer tells you everything about the culture you’re building.

Because wins fade.
Trophies gather dust.
But habits? They stay.

If a child learns to give 100% effort
• when they’re tired
• when they’re losing
• when it’s cold and muddy
• when nobody’s watching

They’re building something bigger than football.
Effort creates resilience.
Effort builds confidence.
Effort turns average ability into serious progress.

I’ll take a team that loses giving everything over a team that wins jogging around — every single time.

Because when effort becomes the standard…
Winning eventually follows anyway.

You can train perfectly, and it still might not go your way.

You can:
⚽ Put in the extra sessions
⚽ Stay after training to work on finishing
⚽ Watch the games back
⚽ Do everything “right”

And still…
A referee decision.
A bad bounce
An injury.
A boggy pitch.
A missed chance.
A stronger opponent on the day.

That’s football. And that’s life.

One of the biggest lessons young players must learn is this:

👉 You control your effort.
👉 You control your attitude.
👉 You control your preparation.

You do not control the outcome.

As coaches and parents, we have to reinforce this message.

Praise the standards.
Praise the response.
Praise the character when things go wrong.

Because resilience isn’t built when everything goes your way.
It’s built when it doesn’t — and you show up again anyway.

Sometimes… a player isn’t struggling because they’re “not good enough”.

They’re struggling because they’re in the wrong level right now.

Confidence is everything in development.

If a player is constantly:

• Second to every ball
• Under pressure every touch
• Making mistakes with few success moments
• Comparing themselves to stronger teammates

They don’t improve 📉

They shrink.

But drop that same player into a division where they can:

✅ Have more time on the ball
✅ Experience success
✅ Win duels
✅ Feel important

And suddenly — they grow. 📈

Here’s the uncomfortable question:

Is it better for a child to sit in a high division and struggle every week…

Or play slightly lower and rebuild confidence, love, and belief?

Because development isn’t a straight line.

Sometimes you have to step sideways to move forward.

What do you think? 👇
Right level > Highest level?
