At Rovers Return, we don’t just teach your puppy to sit—we build a foundation of trust, focus, and calm behaviour that lasts a lifetime. Led by a fully qualified, ATC-registered, and APT-accredited trainer and full member, our classes are completely force-free, science-based, and packed with fun games!

What we will cover:

✅ Managing typical puppy hurdles (biting, jumping, and toilet training)

Your recall will improve when you are proactive, not reactive. Practising calling your dog back, using a recall word and not allowing them to run off too far and waiting for them not to listen to you will create a dog that pings back to you time and time again

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 - 𝗣𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 ❌

When you have a fearful or reactive dog, the internet is full of advice on how to stop the behaviour. But here is the problem: suppressing a bark or a growl doesn't stop the dog from feeling terrified. It just removes their warning signal. 🛑

Think of it like an iceberg. The barking, lunging, and snapping are just the tip above the water. The massive chunk underneath? That’s fear, anxiety, and over-arousal.

There is a lot out there about walking in the heat.

Is it worth the risk? Your dog will tell you they want a walk, but we have to be their advocate.

It is set to cool down tomorrow but it will still be warm.

Knowledge is power.

If you are going to walk your dog and ignore advice at least know the signs where your dog is over heating

It happens quickly
Often there is no return
A rapid cool down can be fatal.

Tips

Avoid walking if

Your dog is a puppy
Your dog is senior
Your 🐕 is a branchial breed or has a small snout
Do not walk them in a muzzle that is not a basket type

If they stop sniffing, pant excessively and the tongue is hanging out go back home immediately!

Do

Walk them early (730 am in the shade was too hot this morning)
Take water with you
Walk in the shade
Use cooling products
If you see your dog show any signs of heat stroke remove them from the heat immediately and give them a drink

An alternative is to do scent work in a shaded garden.

☀️DONT RISK YOUR DOGS LIFE☀️
Know the signs, start cooling, call a vet

Signs of heatstroke can progress very quickly. It only takes a 2°C rise in body temperature for heatstroke to kick in. Once in heatstroke, your dog can suffer from brain damage or even death in 15 minutes!

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately start cooling them down and call a vet for further advice. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life. Research has found that in the UK, 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to vets with heatstroke don’t survive, although 98% that are seen early with mild signs are likely to recover.
