Wallace’s mouth has been a progression over the past 18 months, working to correct imbalances and establish a more comfortable, functional mouth — and he is really starting to show the benefits of that work.

It’s always worthwhile addressing dental imbalances early in a young horse’s life, helping to establish correct dentition and set them up with good oral health for years to come.

🦷🐴 Providing comfort through dental care 🐴🦷

A recent clients horse was showing signs of discomfort when ridden, throwing its head up when contact was taken and becoming unsettled when approaching a fence. Following an oral examination, a large ulcer was found on the inside of the cheek, caused by a very sharp enamel point.

After receiving dental treatment, the source of the discomfort has been addressed, allowing the ulcer to heal and helping the horse feel much more comfortable.

By removing oral pain and improving comfort, horses are better able to focus on their work and education under saddle.

Regular dental care plays an important role in your horse's health, welfare, and performance. Sometimes behavioural signs under saddle can be linked to discomfort in the mouth.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption with hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful and progressive dental disease in horses that causes the part of the tooth below the gum line to be resorbed by the body.

Not all horses suffer from EOTRH, and the condition is mainly found in older horses, affecting an estimated 25–30% of horses over the age of 25.

Clinical signs of EOTRH include excessive plaque buildup around incisor or canine teeth, mouth pain, broken teeth, pustules in the gums, and aversion to haltering or bridling. If you notice these signs in your senior horse, contact your veterinarian for an examination. Treatment for this condition involves surgically removing affected teeth.
