🪱A closer look at some recent post-mortem cases as we go into autumn🪱

Due to the recent wet weather following the summer drought, there has been many significant worm infestations across our farmed species.

One of our recent post-mortems performed by Saffron discovered a high haemonchus (barber’s pole) count in some ewe lambs.
Haemonchus doesn’t present like most other worms as it doesn’t always cause diarrhoea; other signs to look for include:
• Pale mucous membranes (eyes are most reliable spot to check using FAMACHA charts)
• Lethargy, recumbency
• Swelling under the jaw (bottle Jaw)
• Weight loss
• Sudden death

A second case of sudden deaths in ewe lambs post-purchase revealed dosing gun injuries to the back of the oral cavity, causing local necrosis, leading to abscesses within the chest cavity causing death. This is an important thing to consider when drenching and bolusing stock, ensure appropriate handling and the correct product/delivery system is being used.

If you are concerned please call the practice on 01664 491266 we are here to help.
