🍂🐰 Autumn Care Tips for Outdoor Rabbits 🐰🍂
As the weather gets cooler and the nights draw in, it's important to make sure our outdoor bunnies are ready for the change in season! 🍁
Here are a few things to remember to keep your rabbits happy, healthy and comfortable this autumn. 💕
🏡 Keep their accommodation dry – Check hutches and runs for leaks, damp patches and draughts. Their shelter should be weatherproof, well-ventilated and protected from wind and rain.
🧡 Provide plenty of bedding – Extra hay and suitable bedding help rabbits keep warm. Make sure their sleeping area stays clean and dry, and provide plenty of hay for eating too!
💧 Check their water regularly – Water bottles and bowls can freeze as temperatures drop, so check them frequently to ensure your rabbits always have access to fresh, unfrozen water.
🥕 Keep an eye on their diet – Good-quality hay should always make up the majority of their diet. Continue offering their usual balanced diet and introduce any changes gradually.
🍂 Be careful with fallen leaves – Remove damp, mouldy leaves from their enclosure and check the garden for anything potentially toxic or unsafe for curious little mouths.
🐰 Check them daily – Pay attention to their appetite, droppings, behaviour and general condition. Rabbits can hide signs of illness, so any reduction in eating or droppings needs urgent veterinary attention.
🌡️ Think about temperature changes – Rabbits that are already acclimatised to living outdoors can generally cope with cooler weather if they have suitable shelter and company. However, sudden temperature changes can be difficult for them, so avoid moving outdoor rabbits into a centrally heated house and then back outside again.
❤️ Don't forget companionship and enrichment!
Rabbits are social animals and need appropriate companionship, space to exercise, places to hide and opportunities to forage and explore all year round.
🍁 A little extra care now can make a big difference to your bunnies' comfort and wellbeing as we head towards winter!
