Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is a charity established in 1980 to provide a 'taste of the country' within the city boundaries. It provides educational services to disadvantaged young people and adults and offers environmental education to primary school children. It is a working farm with a wide variety of animals, amenity and market gardens and a range of natural habitats. Many of the animals can be

seen from close quarters and fresh farm eggs can be bought in the Farm Shop. There is a small play area for under 12s and the independently-run Barn Coffee Shop is also located on the Farm. In addition to the animals, there are several woodland walks including a longer walk into the Scott Hall Copse at the far end of the Farm.

Veg box members will know the excitement that comes with eating truly seasonal veg!

That feeling when tomato season is approaching, and you know you’ll soon be enjoying the sweetest, most delicious, locally grown tomatoes 🍅

Our tomato plants are all tied up in the poly tunnels that let in light and retain heat to help them grow. We hope you are as excited for the summer produce as we are. Not a veg box member? You can sign up below :)

🐜 Have you explored our bug trail recently? Its the right time of year to discover lots of critters hididng under rocks and chilling on our bug hotels!

🐞We went for a walk round the bug trail and found, a common Brown Click Beetle, Anthomyia procellaris (a fly!), Common Stretch Spider, Graphomya maculata (a different fly!), Hairy Spider Weevil, Birch Catkin Bug and Red Ants!

We're passionate about using and reusing all the natural materials available to us here on the farm, be that recycling our food waste to make nutritious compost for the garden or using the wool from our sheep to make yarn!

The wonderful is spinning the fibres from our sheered sheep and alpacas into versatile yarn that we will hopefully soon sell in the farm shop.

Here's our volunteer Seán using the broadfork to loosen and aerate the soil. This is part of our "minimal tillage" approach to soil care.

We avoid deep digging or turning the soil over in order to preserve the sensitive soil structure, which in turn helps our plants grow healthy roots. Using the broadfork is a great workout for us too!

Lettuces and pak choi that we harvested this week are now in your veg box!

At the moment, roughly half the veg in the veg boxes is grown in the Market Garden, and that will increase as the year rolls forward. Other things we're harvesting at the moment include radishes, herbs, spinach, and rhubarb.
