Water can be more dangerous than it looks ⚠️

Whether it’s canals, rivers or lakes, the risks are real—for everyone. Cold water shock, hidden hazards and slips can turn a normal day into an emergency.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Do not be tempted to enter open water to cool down.

Even in high summer, waters across the UK remain cold enough to trigger cold shock. This can cause rapid breathing and reduced muscle control, making it much harder to swim safely.

Stay Safe. And, if you see someone in trouble in the water, make the right call - call 999! 📲

🦎 Reptile surveys update, Leeds.

Reptile surveys have been taking place throughout April and May — and the results so far are encouraging!
So far we’ve recorded:

• 4 surveys completed

• 3 common lizard spotted (see images below 👇 we even managed to catch one on video)

While numbers are still low, these sightings tell us something important — lizards have been found at different points across the survey area, suggesting they are inhabiting a decent range of the habitat 🌿 So far, all individuals recorded have been female, with one appearing to be gravid (carrying eggs), which is a really positive sign for the population ✅

Surveys may be pausing over the hottest months, then restarting again in August and September. We’ll keep sharing updates as we learn more about these elusive reptiles living in Leeds 👀

🌼🦋 Butterfly surveys are back at Roundhay Park this spring and summer! Our first month of butterfly walks is complete, and it’s been a great start to the season:
• Peacock – 9

• Large white – 1

• Small white – 2

• Orange tip – 4

• Holly blue – 1

We also spotted brimstone and comma butterflies in Canal Gardens and the wildflower meadows. These weren’t included in the official count, as survey locations must stay within set parameters 👀
As the weather warms up, we’re expecting to see more species and higher numbers in the months ahead 🌿 Stay tuned for more updates from our surveys!

Our conservation officer has shared "the butterflies were too quick to photograph", however, please find below a photograph with no butterflies to prove it 👇🤣

💧 Kick sampling surveys are underway for 2026!
Our Tropical World team has been out monitoring the health of local waterways through kick sampling — a simple but effective way of checking water quality by counting the tiny creatures living in it.
March results:

• Cased caddis – 21

• Caseless caddis – 20

• Olive – 121

• Flat-bodied stone clinger – 42

• Gammarus shrimp – 57

• Stonefly – 1

April results:

• Cased caddis – 11

• Caseless caddis – 26

• Olive – 124

• Blue-winged olive – 18

• Flat-bodied stone clinger – 139

• Gammarus shrimp – 77

• Stonefly – 1

All sites scored well in April, with a particularly strong presence of flat-bodied stone clingers — especially at Meanwood Beck ✅
These species are key indicators of water quality, helping us understand how healthy our local streams are. Stay tuned for more updates 💧
