Does your dog go into "protect mode" when they have a favourite toy or something they shouldn't have?

RESOURCE GUARDING ~ It is one of the most misunderstood behaviours in the dog world. Contrary to popular belief, resource guarding isn't about "dominance" or being "bossy" itโ€™s almost always rooted in anxiety and insecurity. Your dog isnโ€™t trying to be mean, theyโ€™re simply worried that if they donโ€™t protect their item it will be taken away.

๐Ÿ—ฏ๏ธLearned Behavior: Sometimes, we inadvertently teach them to guard. If you constantly take things away from your pup/dog, they learn that you are a "thief." Over time, they start guarding because they anticipate you will take their item. Itโ€™s an expression of, "I don't trust that I'll get this back, so I have to hold on for dear life."

Signs ๐Ÿ”Ž
The Freeze: Their muscles lock up, and they stop chewing or eating completely.
The Whale Eye: They turn their head slightly away but keep their eyes fixed on you, showing the whites of their eyes.
The "Body Block": They turn their back to you or crouch low over the item to hide it.
The Gulp: If they try to swallow an item whole, they are desperately trying to "claim" the resource before you can take it.

๐Ÿšซ The "Donโ€™ts": Punishing or trying to force an item away actually makes the behavior more dangerous and will cause long-term damage to your relationship.
โœ… The "Dos": Use the "Trade Game" and counter-conditioning to turn your presence into a predictor of extra treats, not lost items. Put away or avoid items you know they will be likely to guard.

Genetic Factor ๐Ÿงฌ
It affects certain breeds like herding, terriers and retrieves more. Often selectively bred for intense focus, prey possession, or guarding. They have a natural tendency to hold onto, carry and defend. It may also be a result of poor breeding, passed down by parents with bad temperaments.

โš ๏ธ Important Note: If your dog has ever severely reacted, please do not attempt to "fix" this alone. Do Your Own Research! Reach out to a certified professional dog trainer or a veterinary behaviorist who can help you create a plan to manage.
