We are so happy to be committed to have a 100% lived experienced board that reflects our values to bring us into a pawsitive future.

Applications are still open for director positions, however, priority will be given to those from more marginalised backgrounds to better reflect the community we serve.

Today is International Pronouns Day, a day to encourage the sharing of pronouns and promote their respectful use.

Using someone's correct pronouns is an important part of respecting their identity and helping everyone feel included.

Mistakes happen, but what matters is how we respond. If you get someone's pronouns wrong, simply correct yourself, apologise briefly and carry on with kindness and respect.

At NION, we believe in respecting and celebrating people's individual identities, and treating others as we would wish to be treated 🩷

ASSISTANCE DOG OR SERVICE DOG — DOES THE NAME REALLY MATTER?

We've noticed something within the assistance dog community that we think deserves a conversation.

People being criticised, corrected and sometimes even attacked for referring to their assistance dog as a "service dog" in the UK.

But we want to ask something...

What harm is actually being caused?

In the UK, the Equality Act 2010 uses the term "assistance dog". That's the terminology used in the legislation, and understanding our legal rights is important.

But "service dog" is a widely recognised term internationally.

And language isn't always straightforward.

What if English isn't someone's first language?

What if someone is neurodivergent and struggles with terminology?

What if someone has moved to the UK with a dog trained overseas?

What if someone simply prefers calling their dog a service dog?

Does using a different term automatically make their dog any less legitimate?

Of course, we should educate people about UK legislation, particularly when discussing legal rights, access refusals and responsibilities.

But there's a difference between educating someone and policing their language.

At PAL CIC, we believe accessibility should extend to how we communicate with one another.

We can encourage accurate terminology without making people feel unwelcome, embarrassed or excluded.

Surely what matters most is the dog's training, welfare, behaviour and the support they provide their disabled handler, not simply the label someone uses?

SEASONAL SOLIDARITY IS COMING!

Because community is about looking after one another.

The colder months can be difficult. With rising living costs, financial pressures and the expectations that often come with this time of year, we know that not everyone finds the season easy.

That's why Pawsitive Action Leeds CIC is working on something special this December!

A warm drink and a friendly face.

Hopefully some tasty treats too!

Gifts and essential supplies for our four-legged companions.

A welcoming, inclusive space to connect, chat and enjoy some community joy.

No judgement. No questions asked. Just community.

This isn't about Christmas, religion or how you celebrate. It's about bringing people together, regardless of their background, beliefs or circumstances.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We're looking for local businesses, pet shops and wonderful individuals who would like to support Seasonal Solidarity through donations, supplies, sponsorship or simply lending a helping paw!

Whether it's a bag of dog food, a few treats, a financial contribution or something else entirely, every bit of kindness can help us make someone's season a little brighter.

We're still putting everything together, but we wanted to invite our community to be part of making it happen.

Our next Cookies & Canines social is on 21st October, 6pm–8pm at Kulture Coffee, and this time we're getting crafty!

THIS MONTH'S THEME: DIY DOG TOYS!

Got some old T-shirts you don't mind cutting up?
Been wondering why you've been hoarding all those loo roll tubes?

Bring them along!

We'll be having a go at turning everyday bits and pieces into fun DIY enrichment and toys for our dogs. No crafting expertise required, wonky creations are VERY welcome.

As always, Cookies & Canines is a relaxed, accessible and LGBTQIA+ & disability-inclusive social for dog lovers. You don't need to have a dog, all dog lovers are welcome! 💚

Cookies & Canines is changing!

Going forward, every social will have its own theme, giving us something fun, useful or interesting to explore together alongside the usual chatting, coffee and dog appreciation.

And we'd love YOU to get involved.

Real, raw examples of assistance dogs in action and how we get from A to B.

Paws will be showing some new alerts in the "Enola Journals" and answering any questions the community may have.

This isn't about us giving you "Free training".

It's about raising awareness.

Highlighting the dangers of training medical alerts without experience.

But also sharing ideas, knowledge and getting together as a community and building a resource of experts by experience.

Because, no one knows our disabilities better than us.

That's why we're proud to say that every volunteer, director, etc has lived experience, because we wouldn't have it any other way.

PAL CIC has always been a social justice project and we help disabled people become independent through radical action.

We learn from our mistakes and the future is for the community 💚🐾

We all want women and girls to feel safe. But are we having the right conversations about what puts them in danger?

For Black History Month, we're sharing a powerful new blog by Social Justice Activist and Human Rights Campaigner, Saba Ali FRSA, drawing on her experience working alongside survivors of violence and abuse.

Saba explores why Black, South Asian and trans women face particular risks, why their experiences are too often overlooked, and how blaming trans women distracts from tackling the real threat to women's safety: male violence.

💬 "Not once has a survivor told me the danger in her life was a trans woman in a toilet. Every one of them could name the danger. It was a man. Usually a man she knew."

At NION, we believe every woman deserves to feel safe, heard and protected. Women's rights and trans rights are not in opposition.

🌟 Celebrating One of Our Own! 🌟

We are bursting with pride to share that the wonderful Violet has been shortlisted as a finalist for Leeds Children’s Mayor! 🎉

Violet’s inspiring manifesto was written with her brother Johnny in mind. Johnny is part of our Little Hiccups family, and Violet sees first-hand how important genuine inclusion, understanding, and accessibility are for children with additional needs and disabilities.

Her wish? For every child in Leeds to feel included, supported, and free to achieve their full potential—with better access to inclusive sports and activities across our city so everyone can join in, belong, and thrive. 💜

Supporting incredible children and families like Violet and Johnny’s is at the very heart of everything we do, and seeing young people using their voices to make Leeds more inclusive is so uplifting.
