Help us to help more cats like Groot 🐾

Groot came into our care last year and upon arrival, we knew something wasn't right. His eyes were clouded over and he was clearly struggling with his vision and in pain.
After further investigation and a poor diagnosis from a specialist vet, we made the difficult decision to remove both of his eyes to relieve his pain and give him the best quality of life possible.

After a period of recovery in our care, Groot was finally adopted and has reached his ONE YEAR milestone since adoption 🎉
His new owners had the following to say about Groot:

Its coming up to 1 year since we adopted Mr Groot. When we brought him home it was as though he had lived his whole life with us as he simply made himself straight at home.

Over the year he has gone from strength to strength - he charms everyone that comes into the house and likes to make his presence known with a very loud meow. He loves to sleep on the bed and be as close as he physically can be.

Having no eyes poses him no issues at all and one of his favourite things to do is sit out in the garden with us and chase across the lawn after any birds that dare to fly over head. Pigeons are definitely on his hit list and I imagine that in his past life he was a formidable hunter.

He is a special chunky boy who we love and I think its fair to say he loves us nearly as much as he loves his food. ❤

There are still so many cats like Groot waiting for their second chance.
We are running the Inflatable 5k in June to raise vital funds for our centre.
With your support, we can continue to be there for cats that need us.

🌟🐾 As Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, we’d like to say thank you once more our incredible volunteers! 🐾💜

Yesterday, we enjoyed bringing some of our volunteers together for a volunteer get-together to celebrate the amazing contribution they make to Leeds Cat Centre and the cats in our care. We were also delighted to be joined by volunteers from some of our local branches, making it a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate the difference volunteers make for cats across the wider region. 🌟🐾

As part of the afternoon, we enjoyed a special game of Cat Bingo featuring just some of the cats we have helped over the last couple of years, giving us the chance to look back on some of the wonderful cats whose journeys have been supported by our volunteers. 💕

Throughout the week, we've shared the stories of just a few of our volunteers, but every single one of our 127 volunteers plays an important role in helping cats and kittens in need. Whether it's caring for cats at the centre, fostering, transporting cats, fundraising, supporting events, or helping behind the scenes, their dedication, compassion, and generosity make a real difference every day. 😻

Together, our volunteers donate thousands of hours each year to support cats and kittens, and we are incredibly grateful for every hour they give.

Thank you for your time, your kindness, your enthusiasm, and your commitment. And for being true Cat Champions! Quite simply, we couldn't do what we do without you! 💜😻

🌟 🐾 As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’ve been shining a light on some of our amazing volunteers and to round off the week we are shining a light on Caroline, who will celebrate an incredible 10 years of volunteering with Leeds Cat Centre this year! 🐾🌟

Here is what Caroline shared about her volunteering journey with us:

“I first became aware of volunteering at Cats Protection when I saw an advert for cat care volunteers at the newly opened admissions site for the Gildersome Homing Centre (now Leeds Cat Centre).

As I had just left my job, I decided to apply, first volunteering on Mondays and then adding Tuesday mornings. I enjoyed the role straight away as it was a great way to get my cat fix, as I was without a cat at home for the first time in a long time. Cleaning the cat pens also keeps you quite fit!

It is lovely to see the more reserved cats come out of their shells as they settle into their new environment, and all the cats always seem to know when it is feeding time!

I also enjoy meeting the staff team and other volunteers, as well as attending the training courses run by Cats Protection and getting involved with events and fundraising activities.

For me, volunteering at Cats Protection is a wonderful way to meet people and help cats.”

📸 Over almost 10 years of volunteering, Caroline has helped countless cats on their journey to finding loving homes. Here are just a few of the recent cats that Caroline has helped us support. 💜

Thank you, Caroline, for almost 10 years of dedication and support. We are so grateful for the time, care, and commitment you have given to the cats in our care over the years. 💜🐾

🌟🐾 As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a light on some of our amazing volunteers! 🐾🌟

Gemma has been volunteering with Leeds Cat Centre for the last 4 months as a cat care volunteer. Here’s what she had to say about her volunteering journey so far:

“Hi everyone, my name is Gemma, and I’ve been volunteering for four months at Leeds Cat Centre in Gildersome, and I absolutely love it!

So, why did I decide to volunteer? Well, I think I need to start with a confession…

It was never on my radar to apply to volunteer at Cats Protection because, honestly, I always thought I was ‘a dog person’! I know, I know… but please keep reading, it gets better, I promise!

I knew I wanted to volunteer and work with animals (dogs, I thought at the time). I considered applying for volunteer roles with organisations like The Dogs Trust or PDSA. But one day, while out walking my dog Mabel through the village, I passed Cats Protection and thought to myself, ‘I wonder what it would be like there?’

So, I took Mabel home, told my husband where I was going, and headed straight back out the door. But before I left, I remember saying to him, ‘At least this is a safe option - I won’t end up bringing loads of cats home!’

You can probably see where this is heading…

I think it took less than five minutes for Laura, my volunteer manager, to show me around the pens before it hit me: ‘Oh my goodness… I love cats!’

Almost immediately, I found myself thinking about adoption. It hasn’t happened just yet because we live near a main road and have Mabel, so there’s a lot to consider, but I’m keeping my eye out, and I know it will happen one day. 😊

For now, I just love spending time with the cats and helping in any way I can. It’s still early days for me, but everything I’ve experienced so far has really impressed me - from the amazing induction and training to the kindness and support from all the staff and volunteers.

Volunteering has helped me personally, too. Before joining Cats Protection, I had recently left a stressful management role and was trying to find a healthier work-life balance alongside being self-employed. Since becoming a volunteer, I’ve felt much happier and more fulfilled. It has given me the opportunity to do something I’ve always wanted to do - work with animals, contribute to their welfare, advocate for them, and simply help in any way I can.

So, call it a serendipitous twist, but I’m very glad I discovered I am a cat person after all!” 💜

Thank you, Gemma, for everything you do to help the cats in our care. We are so grateful for your time, enthusiasm, and commitment. 💜🐾

🌟🐾 As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a light on some of our amazing volunteers! 🐾🌟

Kath has been volunteering with Leeds Cat Centre for the last 3 months as both a transport volunteer and cat care volunteer. Here’s what she had to say about her volunteering journey so far:

"My volunteering journey started in March this year after being made redundant in September and having major spinal surgery in November. Following my initial recovery, I started looking for something to keep me occupied, lift my mood, and help me learn new skills as I considered retraining for a new career.

This is when I found a volunteering opportunity as a Transport Volunteer with Cats Protection. Initially, it was just a few hours every other Wednesday, which suited me perfectly while I continued to recover. Having previously worked as a van driver, I enjoyed being out on the road, and I had also decided that I would like to retrain to work with animals.

Within a couple of weeks, and after enjoying lots of kitty cuddles, I also started volunteering as a cat care volunteer on my spare Wednesdays. It’s helped me keep a routine and build back towards returning to work, while also supporting the cats in our care.

One of my favourite cats was the lovely Matilda. She was an absolute sweetheart who loved climbing onto your knee for strokes and head bumps before settling down for a nap. She would happily sleep on your lap for well over an hour!

Matilda's story was quite remarkable. She made the local news after being found trapped underneath the bonnet of a car, having travelled around 15 miles hidden in the engine bay. She was brought into Cats Protection and treated for burns to her paws caused by the heat of the engine. Thankfully, Matilda made a full recovery and has now been rehomed with a loving family.

It's happy endings like this, and the opportunity to spend time keeping the cats happy and comfortable, that make volunteering so worthwhile. Volunteering has also been a huge help to my mental health following a difficult period in my life. I've found it incredibly enjoyable, and the team are always supportive and happy to help.

I also volunteer with Dogs Trust Leeds and am looking forward to starting a Level 3 Practical Animal Care Skills course at Kirklees College in September."

Thank you, Kath, for everything you do to help the cats in our care. We are so grateful for your time, care, and commitment 💜🐾

🌟 🐾 As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a light on some of our amazing volunteers! 🌟 🐾

Heather has been volunteering with Cats Protection Leeds Cat Centre for nearly 5 years as both a cat care volunteer and a desensitisation volunteer. Here’s what she had to say about her volunteering journey:

"Hi, my name is Heather and I've been volunteering for Cats Protection for the last 5 years. I can honestly say it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

If you love cats, enjoy the company of like-minded people, being part of a fabulous team, and feeling valued, then come and join us – we'd love to have you on board!

There is a little bit of housework involved, such as washing cat bowls, making sure the washer and dryer are loaded, and a bit of cleaning here and there. But then we get to spend time playing with and fussing over the cats, which is incredibly rewarding, so what's not to love? We are a friendly, outgoing, and happy bunch of cat lovers having the best time.

A little bit about me... I first started volunteering after the retail company I worked for closed down. After 41 years of service, I wasn't quite sure what to do next. I've always been a massive cat lover and have always had cats in my life, so volunteering with Cats Protection really appealed to me. I've never looked back.

During my volunteering journey, I also became involved with our desensitisation programme. This involves spending time with cats who are scared, shut down, or lacking confidence for whatever reason. We sit quietly with them, read to them, and encourage them at their own pace, helping them learn to trust people again.

It can take weeks, sometimes months, but when a cat finally begins to trust you, starts to play, and eventually curls up purring on your lap, it's the best feeling. Seeing them grow in confidence and become ready for their forever home is what it's all about." 💜

📸 Attached are photos of Heather volunteering with just a couple of the many cats she has helped along the way.

Thank you, Heather, for everything you do to help the cats in our care. We are so grateful for your time, care, and commitment. 💜🐾

Lou has been volunteering with Cats Protection for almost 2 years and supports Leeds Cat Centre centre as both a cat care and transport volunteer, as well as volunteering with the Halifax, Huddersfield & Wakefield branch. Here’s what Lou had to say about why she got involved:

“I started volunteering for Cats Protection because I love cats and wanted to make a real difference for animals in need. I’m passionate about advocating for responsible pet ownership and neutering to reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned cats, and I wanted to help with practical tasks — from feeding and cleaning to transporting and supporting cats — that directly improve their lives.”

⭐️ Happy Volunteers’ Week! ⭐️

This Volunteers’ Week, we’d like to give a special shout out and say a huge thank you to our incredible volunteers. 📣😻

We are incredibly lucky to have a team of 128 volunteers supporting Leeds Cat Centre. Together, they donate thousands of hours each year to help care for and support the cats and kittens in our centre, and we appreciate every hour, every helping hand, and the difference they make to the lives of cats every day. 😻💜

Their kindness, dedication, and generosity help change the lives of cats every day, whether that’s through hands-on care, supporting the cats and kittens in our care, helping them feel safe and loved, supporting cat owners, or raising vital funds for our work. 💜🐾

Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without them.

To all of our volunteers, thank you for the time, care, compassion, and enthusiasm you bring to the cats and to Leeds Cat Centre. We are endlessly grateful for the difference you make. 💜
