What a lovely way to finish our 6 Week Pet Gundog Skills Level 1 course 🐾💚

Yesterday was all about bringing everything together — focus, lead walking, sits, stays, recall, retrieves, placeboards, delivery and directional foundations — and I honestly couldn’t be prouder of this group 👏

Every team has worked so hard over the past six weeks and it’s been amazing watching both the dogs and handlers grow in confidence week by week.

A massive well done to all of our graduates 🎓🐶
And the biggest compliment of all… one them has already booked straight back onto the next set of courses as they enjoyed it so much 🥹💕

This is exactly what Pet Gundog Skills is about — building real-life skills, engagement and teamwork in a fun, supportive environment.

Level 1 may be finished… but this is only the beginning for these teams 💚

A huge congratulations to my latest Puppy Class graduates 🎓🐾💕

Every single one of these pups has come on so much over the course — from learning focus and engagement, to lead walking, recall, calmness and building confidence around other dogs and people 👏

Watching the relationships between owners and their puppies grow is honestly one of my favourite parts of the job 💚

You should all be so proud of yourselves and your puppies 🐶

Absolutely amazing day today with 3 Gundog classes and 1 Puppy Progression class 🐾💚

These Labrador puppies absolutely smashed their sit stays and recalls straight back to their owners today 👏
I genuinely love being part of their journey from tiny puppies right through their training and watching that connection and understanding grow week by week.

Today’s Gundog classes focused on:
🐶 Directions
🐶 Delivery work
🐶 Bringing together all the skills they’ve been learning over the past few weeks

And the more advanced group also worked on hunting exercises today too 👏

Different dogs. Different stages. Same goal — building dogs that choose their handler, even when the world gets exciting 💚

If you want to discuss your dogs training journey and how I can help please do message me and I look forward to helping you and your dog or puppy on their training journey.

May the 4th be with you… from me and the gang 🐾✨

Training, connection, and a little bit of fun along the way 💛

Whether you’ve got a young pup or a dog that keeps you on your toes… remember – great training is about the bond you build together.

This is the way 🐶💫

Axl out helping again today 👌🐾

This is Yogi, who can be reactive around other dogs.

We started off exactly how we should…
👉 calm
👉 still
👉 giving her time to settle and take everything in

No rushing. No pressure.

As she started to relax, we built things up gradually — moving, working, giving her something to focus on.

Then came the real test 👀

A long sit stay with Axl…
followed by a recall past Yogi.

And this is the important bit…

She saw him.
She noticed him.

…and then chose to focus straight back on her owner 👏

No reaction. No explosion. Just calm thinking.

This is what training should look like.

Not forcing dogs to “ignore”…
but teaching them how to process, think and make better choices.

So many reactive dogs aren’t “bad” dogs…
they just haven’t been shown what to do instead.

Really proud of how she handled this today 👏🐾

CASE STUDY: Klay 🐾 (Session 3 of 10)

This one is a really special one for me.

Klay is a Cocker who, when we started working together, struggled with interaction and would often stay on his rug, choosing distance over engagement.

By this session, his owners had one main concern:
👉 “How do we get him off treats? He’s getting a bit porky.”

So instead of removing rewards… we changed what we were rewarding with.

---

# # # 🎾 The Shift

We moved from food to play.

We introduced a simple version of my “Are You Ready?” game using balls instead of treats.

We started with two…
Then added a third…

And something really important happened 👇

Klay started to:
- Take the ball from my hand
- Bring it back (in his own way)
- Re-engage again and again

All on his terms.

No pressure. No forcing. No invading his space.

---

# # # 🧠 The Real Progress

This wasn’t about fetch.

This was about:
- Building trust
- Creating choice
- Making interaction feel safe and enjoyable

By the end of the session…

He didn’t just stay on the rug.

👉 He wanted to play
👉 He wanted to engage
👉 He wanted more

And as I left…

👉 He followed me.

---

# # # 💬 Why This Matters

So many dogs labelled as “difficult” or “extreme” aren’t trying to be either.

They’re just unsure, overwhelmed, or have learnt that distance feels safer than interaction.

When you change the approach:
- Reduce pressure
- Use what the dog actually values
- Allow them to choose

Everything starts to shift.

---

# # # 🐾 Final Thought

Training isn’t about forcing behaviour.

It’s about creating an environment where the dog wants to make a different choice.

And when they do…

That’s where the real progress happens 💛

If you’re struggling with your dog and not sure where to start, just drop me a message.

This puppy isn’t even 5 months old…

Sitting. Staying.
Being recalled from a huge distance…

…and choosing to run past a food bowl.

For a Labrador, that’s a big ask 😅

This isn’t about teaching tricks.
It’s about building focus, understanding and connection.

Because it’s not what your dog can do…
it’s what they choose to do when it matters.

This was from my Puppy Progression class at Scalm Park
and this is where training really starts to come together 👏

If you’d love this kind of control with your dog:

This is a puppy that isn’t even 5 months old… 👀🐾

Sitting. Staying.
Being recalled from a huge distance…

…and choosing to run past a food bowl.

For a Labrador, that’s no small thing 😅. Most Labradors wouldn’t run past a food bowl… let alone at 5 months old 👀

This is what happens when we don’t just teach behaviours…
we build understanding, focus and connection.

Because it’s not about whether your dog can do something —
it’s about whether they choose to do it when it actually matters.

This was from my Puppy Progression class at Scalm Park on Sunday
and I couldn’t be prouder of what these dogs (and owners) are achieving 👏

If you’d love this kind of focus and control with your own dog:

🐶 Puppy Courses – for younger puppies starting out
🎓 Puppy Progression – for older puppies ready to level up (whether you’ve trained with me before or not)
🎯 Pet Gundog Skills Level 1 – building engagement, connection and control using gundog-style training

Training doesn’t have to be complicated…
but it does need to be consistent.

And the results speak for themselves 🐾

🐾 Pet Gundog Skills – Week 3

This is what it looks like when things start to click… 👇

Dogs working calmly ✔️
Owners gaining confidence ✔️
Real focus, even around distractions ✔️

---

Yesterday we introduced:
• Retrieves (with proper delivery 👏)
• Directional work
• Distance control
• And building dogs that can work away from you… and still choose you

---

What I love most?
It’s not just about the dogs learning…

It’s watching the handlers go from
“Will they even do this?”
to
“Wow… I didn’t think my dog could do that.” ❤️

---

This is exactly what Pet Gundog Skills Level 1 is about.

Not perfection.
Not pressure.

👉 Just building real-life skills that actually matter.
