Summer 2026 has been all about catching up with old friends. 🐾

Summer is always a busy time for pet drop-ins but as I've been going over my photos I realised just how many familiar faces I've had the pleasure of catching up with.

I've been looking after all these guys for over four years now, and it's always lovely to see them. Especially in the chaos of summer, it's nice to have a bit of familiarity. They know me, I know them, and I know all their little quirks and routines.

Four years of visits, cuddles, treats and catching up. I'm a very lucky lady!

Wellbeing Wednesday 🐾

Today I'm collaborating with Clare coaching - Leading Ladies Coaching to talk about something we don't always think about when we're talking about our dogs: our own wellbeing.

I've talked before about how important it is to give dogs time on their walks to sniff, explore and take in the world, rather than focusing solely on how many miles we've covered. That time to decompress can be really valuable for their mental wellbeing.

But what can easily get overlooked is ours.

Life expects a lot from us, and sometimes we need to slow down too.

If, like me, you live with a reactive dog, walks aren't always the peaceful break we might need. We're often busy scanning for triggers, planning ahead and managing the environment. We often need to think of an alternative to a "wellbeing walk".

Maybe that's sitting in the garden together. Getting cosy on the sofa. Putting your phone down and simply noticing your dog beside you. If they enjoy it, give them some slow strokes. Notice the warmth of their body.

And while you're having that quiet moment together, perhaps check in with yourself too. Ask "how am I feeling right now?"

You don't necessarily need to do anything about the answer. Sometimes just noticing how we're feeling is a useful place to start.

Current goal: making nail care less of a drama. 🐾

Brian isn't a fan of having his paws handled, and after having his quick caught in the past, he's understandably not keen on nail trims either.

We're working through Susan Garrett's Pedicure Please programme, which breaks the process down into small steps so we can gradually build his confidence and help him feel more comfortable with nail care. Our current steps are building a positive association with a nail grinder tool and establishing a calm "nail care position".

We're taking it verrrrrry slowly and prioritising him feeling calm and happy throughout the process. In the meantime, we're using a scratch board to stop his nails turning into little talons. 😂

Who knew theft could be good for a dog?!

Brian has decided the garden is his personal blackberry buffet.

Foraging can be a great form of enrichment, giving opportunities for dogs to engage in natural behaviours, problem solve and make independent choices. So I'm letting him off this crime. 😂

Your dog might be telling you they're uncomfortable, and you might not even realise it. 👀

We all know the big signs that our dog is not happy. Barking, lunging, growling, even biting in very serious situations.

But did you know there are also lots of more subtle signs?

Yawning, lip licking, turning away, scratching and sniffing can all be signs that a dog is finding something difficult.

But here's the important bit: none of these behaviours automatically mean stress.

It's all about the context.

Yawning when they're not tired. Licking their lips when there's no food around. Scratching out of nowhere.

These odd-looking, unexpected little behaviours might be a sign that your dog's stress levels are starting to rise, especially if you see more than one, or your dog has recently experienced something you know they're not a fan of.

Brian, for example, hasn't always been a fan of his harness.

When I got it out to get ready for a walk, he would immediately lie down and start having a really good scratch.

When this became a regular pattern, I took it as a sign that he wasn't looking forward to having his harness on, rather than actually feeling itchy.

I've since bought him a new harness and spent time building a positive association with it before even putting it on. And ta-dah! No more itching at walk time.

So why not take a little time to observe your dog and see if you spot any of these quirky little signals?

If we can identify them at these early stages, it gives us a chance to help our dogs feel more comfortable, rather than waiting for things to escalate into those more obvious signs of stress.

And who wouldn't want to do that? 🐾
