🐾 A little positivity about dog owners 🐾

We often see posts about the negative side of dog ownership — people not picking up after their dogs, irresponsible owners and so on. So today I wanted to share something positive. ❤️

While walking Rio, Prince and Polly around Marks Road Fields and Tipsy Copse, we came across some fresh water and a dog bowl with a lovely little message:

“Please leave here for thirsty dogs.” 🐶💧

It was such a simple but thoughtful gesture, and my three were very grateful for a lovely drink!

I truly believe most dog owners are like this — kind, caring and looking out for each other’s dogs.

So, thank you to whoever took the time to leave the water and bowl there.. 🐾❤️

One year ago today, I had a radical hysterectomy, bowel resection and appendix removal after years of battling severe endometriosis.

An 8-hour operation involving multiple surgeons, followed by 5 days in hospital, changed my life.

Today, I can honestly say I am pretty much pain free. 🙌

What I wasn’t prepared for was everything that came after. The hormone rollercoaster has been absolutely wild, and even a year later I’m still trying to find the right balance. I’ve only just had my first appointment with a menopause specialist.

Although I never wanted any more children, I didn’t realise how deeply I would feel the loss of having that choice taken away from me. It’s a strange kind of grief that can exist alongside relief.

Recovery from surgery like this isn’t measured in weeks or even months. It can take years for your body and mind to recover from such major surgery and the enormous stress it places on you.

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the surgeons and medical teams who gave me my quality of life back. To anyone facing this surgery or navigating recovery: be patient with yourself and shout the loudest!!

Here’s to living with less pain, continuing to heal, and appreciating just how far I’ve come. 💛

Have you ever seen an X-ray of a dog’s foot? 🐾🩻

This is Rio’s left front foot after he injured his outermost toe.

The X-rays show the incredible anatomy of a dog’s paw. Each toe is made up of three bones:
🦴 P1 (proximal phalanx) – closest to the foot.
🦴 P2 (middle phalanx).
🦴 P3 (distal phalanx) – the bone that sits inside the claw.

These connect to the metacarpal bones through the metacarpophalangeal (knuckle) joints, with additional interphalangeal joints between each phalanx, allowing the toes to flex and absorb impact while running.

You can also see Rio’s claws on the X-ray. Each claw is supported by the P3 (distal phalanx), the small bone that sits inside it. Surrounding this bone is the quick—the living part of the nail that contains blood vessels and nerves. Because the quick is made of soft tissue, it isn’t visible on an X-ray.

After reviewing the X-rays, our amazing vet Fiona at southbourne vets confirmed Rio has an avulsion fracture. This means a tendon or ligament has pulled off a small fragment of the P3 bone where it attaches.

The good news is that it doesn’t need surgery at this stage. The plan is conservative management with:
🐾 Strict rest
💊 Meloxicam for pain and inflammation
⏳ At least another three weeks of recovery

If the toe doesn’t heal well or remains painful, the specialist said the P3 bone could be surgically removed, although that’s considered a backup option if conservative treatment isn’t successful.

It’s amazing how such a tiny bone can make such a big difference to a dog’s comfort. Fingers crossed Rio heals well with rest so he can get back to his favourite adventures. ❤️🐶

Poor Ralphie came home from his walk looking really uncomfortable. He was pawing at his mouth and his owner knew something wasn’t right. After checking, he couldn’t see anything obvious, so he gave me a call..

With my veterinary nursing background, two things immediately came to mind:
🌾 A grass seed - we have seen LOADS this year.
🪵 A stick lodged across the roof of his mouth between his teeth.

I popped round, had a look, and sure enough… there was a stick firmly wedged between his upper teeth across the roof of his mouth! Once I’d carefully hooked it out, Ralphie was instantly back to his happy self, had a big drink, and carried on as if nothing had happened. 🥰

A stressful situation resolved in just a few minutes, a comfortable Ralphie, and thankfully no emergency trip to the vets. 💙

It’s a great reminder that after woodland walks or games of fetch with sticks, it’s always worth checking your dog’s mouth if they are:
🐾 Pawing at their face or mouth.
🐾 Drooling more than usual.
🐾 Gagging or repeatedly opening and closing their mouth.
🐾 Suddenly reluctant to eat or drink.
🐾 Acting like something is stuck but you can’t immediately see it.

And one final tip… although many dogs love carrying sticks, they can cause splinters, puncture wounds, or become lodged like Ralphie’s did. Safer fetch toys are always a better choice where possible. 🦴

So pleased we could get Ralphie feeling himself again! 💕🐶
