☀️THE SUN IS BACK! 😎
It's that time of year again, where the sun is coming back out to play, which is great for us humans but not always so great for our Canine friends.
I've shared below some things to be mindful of this summer, please familiarise yourself and share, because if we don't protect and advocate for dogs then who will?
- Avoid mid-day walks in the direct sunlight and on pavements! This shouldn't have to be said but year on year people continue to put their dogs in danger by doing this. If you can't avoid a mid-day walk, do it somewhere shaded and on grass.
- Dogs should NOT drink water while panting! This can lead to vomitting and bloat which can be fatal. Instead, allow them small controlled amounts or wait 20-30 minutes before allowing them to free drink.
- If your dog has a double coat, they are more likely to suffer from heatstroke.
- If your dog is bald, has bald patches or has a thin coat, they are more likely to get sunburn. Avoid direct sun!
- If you believe your dog may be too hot, cool them down slowly and safely. If you cool them down too quickly, this can put them into shock which can be fatal.
- If you can, walk you dog either first thing in the morning or in the evening, as it starts to cool down.
- Before you walk your dog on pavement, or any tarmac surface, place the back of your hand on the floor for 5 to 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws!
- Your dog doesn't need to come shopping with you! Your dog would much rather keep cool at home than melt in your car.
- If your dog's safety isn't enough for you to listen and follow the above guidelines; then just picture the vet bills instead 🙄
Your dog will not die if it misses a walk or two. Please be responsible this summer!
If I've forgotten anything, please comment below! We all want to enjoy the sun, let's do it safely 🥰☀️
