From Limited Exposure to Clear Communication!

Meet this Cocker Spaniel, who was rehomed after previously being used as a breeding stud.

During his earlier life, he had received very limited socialisation, environmental exposure and regular exercise, particularly around unfamiliar dogs and the wider outside world.

When we began training, one of our biggest priorities wasn’t simply teaching behaviours, it was creating a clear and reliable communication system between dog and his owners.

Before we could expect him to make better choices in challenging environments, we needed him to understand exactly what his handler was asking of him.

Through consistent communication, clear markers and reinforcement, we began building value in the behaviours the handler wanted, while giving the dog greater clarity about what was expected of him.

As that communication became more reliable, we could gradually introduce dogs, people, movement and different environments while maintaining the same expectations.

The goal wasn’t simply exposure.

It was teaching him how to behave and communicate with his handler during that exposure.

Great to see such a fantastic range of different working breeds joining us for today’s Gun Dog Foundations Taster & Introduction Session.

A brilliant opportunity to introduce dogs and handlers to the foundations of gundog training, building engagement, confidence, control and natural working ability through practical exercises.

After watching a distance control challenge from a trial over the weekend, I thought I’d give it a go myself…

It started well, progressed exactly as planned, and I was feeling pretty pleased with how it was coming together…

Then I sent the video to the Gun Dog group chat… ( & )

Somehow, the distance control challenge quickly turned into “can you drink a b**r while the dog pulls you in the cart!!” 🍺😂

Safe to say, that wasn’t part of the original training plan, but dog training can change during the session right?

It’s back!!!

Our 5-Part Livestock Neutrality Course

A well-trained dog should be able to remain calm, focused, and under control around livestock. Our 5-Part Livestock Neutrality Course has been designed to safely introduce dogs to sheep horses, birds and other farm animals, helping them develop confidence, self-control, and appropriate behaviour in a controlled environment. Through progressive training sessions, you’ll learn how to manage your dog’s instincts, improve engagement, and build reliable obedience around real-life distractions. It’s not just about better training, it’s also about responsible dog ownership. Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act, owners can face serious consequences if their dog worries or attacks livestock, including prosecution, significant fines, and in severe cases, the dog may be seized or even euthanised. This course gives you the skills and confidence to help ensure your dog can safely coexist around livestock while protecting both your dog and the animals it encounters.

Not a reaction. Not a worry. Not a problem.

What a session 💪🏼

Dogs that were once reactive. Dogs that lacked confidence. Dogs that were sensitive to noise.

Today, they relaxed. They remained calm. They accepted their environment. It’s been about building understanding, confidence, and trust until the dog no longer feels the need to react.

Watching these dogs make that transition is exactly why we do what we do.

Every decision is another step towards a better relationship between dog and handler.

Great Work All. 💪🏼
