From Limited Exposure to Clear Communication!
Meet this Cocker Spaniel, who was rehomed after previously being used as a breeding stud.
During his earlier life, he had received very limited socialisation, environmental exposure and regular exercise, particularly around unfamiliar dogs and the wider outside world.
When we began training, one of our biggest priorities wasn’t simply teaching behaviours, it was creating a clear and reliable communication system between dog and his owners.
Before we could expect him to make better choices in challenging environments, we needed him to understand exactly what his handler was asking of him.
Through consistent communication, clear markers and reinforcement, we began building value in the behaviours the handler wanted, while giving the dog greater clarity about what was expected of him.
As that communication became more reliable, we could gradually introduce dogs, people, movement and different environments while maintaining the same expectations.
The goal wasn’t simply exposure.
It was teaching him how to behave and communicate with his handler during that exposure.
