Ok we haven't lost a dog recently but if we had.....

The old collar still jingles in the drawer,
a small metallic ghost
answering the phantom scratch at the back door.

For years, the day was measured
not by the ticking clock
but by the rhythmic thud of a heavy tail
against the rug.

Now, the hallway feels too wide.
The sunlight hits the floorboards in empty
squares
where a patch of warm fur used to rest.

Memory is a quiet walk we take alone,
whistling into the wind,
half-expecting a shadow to come rushing from the trees.

We have been asked about keeping our dogs cool and Google will give you many suggestions. One thing is to put a damp towel down to lay on.
What we would say is never drape a wet towel over them, it makes them hotter!
