Meet Mickey โ€“ a big character who recently spent some time with us at Cliffe Equine Hospital.

Mickey was initially seen by our Ambulatory Team after developing painful, sore eyes. Examination revealed eosinophilic keratitis (EK), an immune-mediated condition affecting the cornea, which in Mickeyโ€™s case had caused ulcers in both eyes.

With frequent eye medication proving understandably difficult at home, Mickey was admitted to the hospital for more intensive treatment, under the care of treating vet Sophie Llewellyn and House Vet Billy Dean-Gant.

๐“๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Œ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ฒโ€™๐ฌ ๐ž๐ฒ๐ž๐ฌ

Sub-palpebral lavage systems (SPLs) were placed in both eyes, allowing most of Mickeyโ€™s medication to be administered without repeatedly applying drops directly to his sore eyes.

Mickey had also developed thick plaques over the corneal ulcers. These were carefully removed before the affected areas were debrided using a diamond burr to support healing.

But there was one challenge โ€“ not all of Mickeyโ€™s medication could be administered through his SPLs.

One particularly thick eye ointment still needed to be applied directly to his eye twice a day, and understandably, Mickey wasnโ€™t particularly keen.

๐€ ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก

Alongside his ophthalmic treatment, the team introduced positive reinforcement and clicker training. Mickey was gradually rewarded for appropriate behaviours, helping him become more comfortable and willing to participate while his medication was administered.

The same approach was used for his oral pain relief. Mickey initially accepted his medication disguised in food, but being the perceptive character he was, he soon became suspicious of this approach too.

Behavioural training helped the team find a more positive and cooperative way forward, maintaining Mickeyโ€™s confidence and trust throughout his stay.

๐€ ๐ก๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž

Mickey responded well to treatment. His ulcers healed, his SPLs were removed and he was able to head home.

Importantly, the behavioural training carried out during his hospital stay meant his owners were able to continue his remaining eye medication successfully at home for a further two weeks. After this, no further treatment was required.

Mickeyโ€™s case is a brilliant example of how clinical ophthalmology and behavioural training can work hand in hand. By considering both the physical and behavioural needs of the patient, we can help make intensive treatment less stressful while supporting patient welfare and treatment success.

Well done, Mickey โ€“ and a fantastic team effort from Sophie, Billy and our hospital team.

A big thank you to Mickey's lovely owners for letting us share his story!

Meet Georgia!

Weโ€™re delighted to welcome Georgia Benson to the Cliffe Equine team as one of our ambulatory vets!

Georgia qualified as a vet in 2023 before completing an 18-month ambulatory internship on the Isle of Wight, gaining plenty of hands-on experience with a varied equine caseload. She then continued her veterinary career in Kent before joining us here at Cliffe Equine.

Georgia has a particular passion for equine lameness and diagnostic imaging and is currently undertaking an advanced postgraduate Certificate in Equine Lameness Diagnosis and Therapeutics. She is also an FEI Level 1 Official Veterinarian, which sees her working at equestrian events across the country โ€“ pretty cool, if we do say so ourselves!

Outside of work, Georgia is a trustee of a childrenโ€™s charity and loves spending time with her family in Surrey, walking her dog Vinnie, and travelling somewhere warm whenever she gets the chance!

Weโ€™re very excited to have Georgia on board โ€“ please join us in giving her a very warm welcome to Cliffe Equine! ๐Ÿ’™

Meet Claudia!

Weโ€™re delighted to welcome Claudia Gardner to the Cliffe Equine team as our new House Vet!

Originally from South East London, Claudia graduated from the University of Glasgow this year and has already gained some fantastic experience, including externships at Rossdales and Bell Equine, as well as four weeks working at a charitable hospital for working equids in Morocco.

Claudia is looking forward to developing her experience across all areas of equine veterinary medicine, with a particular interest in caring for inpatients and internal medicine.

Outside of work, she loves painting and cooking and is looking forward to exploring Sussex, being closer to family and, in her words, escaping the Scottish weather!

Weโ€™re so pleased to have you with us, Claudia โ€” welcome to Cliffe Equine! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฉต

Blindley Heath Horse Trials Round-Up

Another fantastic and successful weekend at Blindley Heath Horse Trials!

Cliffe Equine vets Sophie Llewelyn, Billy Dean-Gant, Sophie Lunshof and Ellie Casselden were on hand across the weekend, providing veterinary cover and supporting competitors throughout the event.

Of course, it wouldnโ€™t be Blindley Heath without the Cliffe Equine Krispy Kremes! ๐Ÿฉ We were delighted to keep the brilliant fence judges fuelled with a well-earned doughnut delivery.

Despite the recent dry weather and drought conditions, the event was a great success and a wonderful weekend of sport.

A huge well done to everyone who competed, volunteered, organised and helped make the weekend possible. Weโ€™re very proud to support such a fantastic local event. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿด
