“Your dog’s friendly.” Mine may not be—and an uncontrolled approach can undo weeks of work.

The approaching dog isn’t to blame. It is doing what it has been allowed to do. But the dog on lead has nowhere to go, and reaction can become its only option.

Before allowing off-lead freedom, train a reliable recall. If you see a dog on lead and recall is uncertain, put yours back on lead. And always ask before allowing a greeting.

Has this happened to you?

A muzzle isn’t a confession. It’s a piece of safety equipment.

A properly conditioned dog isn’t being punished by wearing one. The dog is gaining safe access to places and situations that might otherwise be impossible.

Introduce it voluntarily. Put food through the front and let the dog place its own face inside. Don’t force it, and progress at the dog’s pace.

For walks, use a correctly fitted basket muzzle with room to pant, drink and take food.

Would you muzzle-train your dog before an emergency?

Your fourteen-month-old dog probably hasn’t forgotten its training.

Adolescence can make recall disappear, bring new barking and leave owners feeling as though they no longer exist.

Put the long line back on so ignored cues aren’t rehearsed. Stop asking for things you cannot follow through on. Start rewarding the easy behaviours again.

Most of all, don’t get heavy with an adolescent dog. Stay consistent and help them through it.

How old is yours, and what seems to have become harder?

Would you have walked past this dog?

The barking dog at the front gets overlooked. The quiet one at the back can look like the easy choice.

But quiet doesn’t always mean calm, and a kennel door only shows you part of the dog.

Outside the kennel, I give the dog time with no commands and no pressure. I watch whether the body loosens, how long recovery takes and whether the dog chooses to come back.

If you’re considering adoption, ask to meet the dog outside the kennel—and visit again on another day if you can.

If the food appears before the behaviour, your dog can learn to wait until it sees the payment.

A lure is useful for the first few repetitions because it helps show the movement. But it should disappear quickly.

Ask with empty hands. Give the dog a moment to think. When the behaviour happens, bring out the reward.

Same dog. Same sit. A completely different lesson.

Have you ever felt like your dog only listens when you’re holding food?

“He just needs socialising.” Somebody you trusted probably told you that.
With a reactive dog it's the worst thing you can do. He isn't learning that other dogs are fine — he's practising
being frightened of them, and getting better at it every time.
Socialisation is real, it just isn't this. It happens between about 3 and 16 weeks. If your dog is already worried,
that window shut a long time ago, and what helps now is the opposite of a park full of dogs: fewer dogs, further
away, for longer than you'd like.
Who told you your dog needed socialising?

Your dog isn't ignoring you. He genuinely can't hear you.
Get close enough to something that worries him and the thinking part of the brain switches off. Shouting louder
doesn't reach him — there's nobody home to shout at.
Same dog, same word, thirty seconds apart. The only thing we changed was distance.
Every dog has a distance where he can still think. Find it, work there, and shrink it a little at a time over weeks.
You can't train a dog who's drowning.
How close can another dog get before you lose yours?

You turn the corner and there's a dog six feet away. No warning. You've got about two seconds.
Most people freeze, tighten the lead and stand there hoping it passes. All of that makes it worse — a tight lead
tells your dog something's wrong, and standing still leaves him nothing to do but react.
Say his name, turn your whole body, and go. Cheerfully, no drama. Get yourself between him and the other
dog and move, and he'll come with you.
And don't try to feed him through it. Nine dogs out of ten won't take a treat at six feet, and that's your answer — a dog who won't eat is a dog who's already gone.
Where does it happen to you? Corners, cars, that one street?

18/09/2026

There's no such thing as “small dog syndrome”.
When a little dog barks at everything, he's not being bossy. He's frightened. Everything on the street is bigger
than him, and strangers reach down and touch him in a way they'd never try with a Rottweiler. When he
stiffens, nobody notices. So he growls. People laugh. Then he snaps.
Take him seriously before he has to shout. Step between him and whatever it is. And if you need to pick him
up, pick him up — that's not cheating, that's your job.

Most people think a dog rolling on its back is asking for a belly rub. Often it isn’t. 🐾
There’s a five-second test that tells you the truth: stop, and wait. If they come back and ask for more, that’s a yes. If they stay put or wander off, that’s your answer too — and most people never stop long enough to hear it.
Try it on your dog tonight. What did they tell you? 👇
