Box rest can be a nightmare for all involved – the horse restricted and frustrated, the owner stressed and challenged and the vet trying to ensure clinical needs are met so the horse has the best possible outcome.

The new ‘Coping with Confinement toolkit’ is a guide for professionals to provide the best environment and management to improve outcomes for horses. There is also a guide for owners.

A accident prone horse who spent a lot of time on box rest was the inspiration behind Bowland Equine Therapy. The urge to provide a better environment that looked after the psychological and behavioural needs of the horse led to the outdoor pens and allowing horses to socialise.

🍂 Definite autumnal feel this evening going out to do haynets and checks.

🌞 Seems like just last week I was putting ponies out for the night in sunshine!!

☁️ However I love the atmosphere and colours of autumn, and dare I say it the chilling down - prospect of cosy nights and w**e by the fire 🔥

🤠 Who weighs haynets???

We weigh all our nets, even for those on ad-lib

👉 Daily forage weight calculated for each horse depending on current condition and if they need to lose, gain or maintain weight

👉 Split into 5/6 portions so no long periods without food for those on a more restricted diet

👉 Soaked for those with respiratory problems or wanting to lose weight

Huge thanks to Lindsay for a really interesting session. Objective gait analysis gives a baseline and helps monitor rehab progress. Used routinely it can pick up on those 'not quite right' moments enabling intervention before an issue occurs.
