Dog Breed Myth #15: Pugs are low-maintenance lap dogs.
Pugs are often chosen for their small size, affectionate nature and reputation as easy, apartment-friendly companions.
Because of this, they are frequently labelled as “low-maintenance” dogs that don’t require much training, exercise or structure.
The reality is more complex.
Pugs are companion dogs, and many are highly social, people-focused and enjoy being involved in everyday life. They can also be food-motivated, attention-seeking and prone to frustration if their needs are not clearly understood.
While their exercise requirements are generally lower than many other breeds, this does not mean they do not require training, routine or mental enrichment. Structure and stimulation still play an important role in their overall wellbeing.
It’s also important to consider that Pugs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they are predisposed to certain health issues that can affect breathing, heat tolerance and exercise capacity. This makes thoughtful management of activity and lifestyle especially important.
Without the right balance, behaviours such as barking, clinginess or difficulty settling can develop and are often misunderstood as laziness or stubbornness, when they are more accurately linked to unmet needs or physical limitations.
A Pug is not a “no-effort” dog — they are a companion breed that requires informed, responsible care.
Low exercise needs does not mean low responsibility.
Do you own a Pug? What’s something people often misunderstand about them?

You don’t need to spend hours training your dog every day.

Training doesn’t have to mean setting aside a huge chunk of your day and running through cue after cue.

A couple of repetitions before dinner.
A recall in the garden.
A wait at the door.
Practising a settle while you watch TV.
Rewarding a good check-in on a walk.
That’s training too.

Short, useful repetitions throughout everyday life can add up to a lot of learning without turning your day into a full-time dog-training course.
And you don’t need to train every behaviour every single day.

Keep it practical, keep it relevant and give your dog plenty of time to just be a dog.

What is an extinction burst in dog training?

An extinction burst is a temporary increase in a behaviour when it stops getting the result it used to.

Your dog has learned that a particular behaviour works.

You stop reinforcing it.

So instead of immediately giving up, they may try it more intensely, more frequently or in a different way.

Think of a dog pawing at you for attention.

If pawing has worked before, and suddenly it doesn’t, they might paw harder, paw more, bark, jump up or try something else that has worked in the past.

That temporary increase is an extinction burst.
And it’s one reason consistency matters when changing a behaviour.

If the behaviour occasionally still gets the result your dog wants, they may learn that trying harder sometimes pays off.

Dog Breed Myth #14: Cocker Spaniels are just soft family dogs.
Cocker Spaniels are one of the UK’s most popular breeds, often chosen for their affectionate nature, beautiful appearance and reputation as friendly family companions.
Because of this, many people assume they are naturally easy, low-maintenance dogs.
In reality, Cocker Spaniels are working gundogs, bred to flush and retrieve game in dense cover. Their role required stamina, scenting ability, responsiveness and a strong drive to work closely with humans.
This means many Cockers are highly engaged with their environment, sensitive to stimulation and naturally driven by scent and movement. While this makes them intelligent and responsive companions, it also means they can become overwhelmed or overexcited without appropriate structure.
Behaviour such as pulling on the lead, barking, frustration or difficulty settling is often misinterpreted as “bad behaviour,” when it is more accurately a sign of unmet breed needs.
Cockers are not low-maintenance dogs. They are sensitive, intelligent and driven working dogs who thrive when their instincts are understood and appropriately channeled.
With structure, training and enrichment, they become fantastic companions. Without it, many struggle in modern pet environments.
Do you own a Cocker Spaniel? What’s been your experience with their energy and temperament?
