Some new arrivals at Hogamammas ❤️🦔

Four tiny baby hoglets have travelled all the way from Inverkeithing after their mum sadly abandoned them after a nest disturbance. 💔

Their eyes are still firmly closed, so these little ones are completely dependent on us. They need hand feeding and toileting around the clock until they’re big enough to do things for themselves.

They’re now all settled together in the incubator, keeping warm and cosy. 🥰 A huge thank you once again to the Cat Hotel fundraising team for donating our incubator — it’s already proving invaluable for little ones like these.

And me? I’m mentally preparing myself for feeds every two hours… day and night! ☕😂

They may be tiny, but they’ve already got four very determined little personalities. Fingers crossed we can give all four the best possible start and watch them grow into strong, healthy hedgehogs. ❤️🦔

🦔🌿 A FEW MORE RELEASES! 🌿🦔

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Hogamammas, and we’re delighted to share some more happy release stories! 🥰

☀️ Sunny & Cloudy ☁️

Sunny came into rescue after being caught in a rat trap, which had partially severed her toes. She was also suffering from Capillaria, ringworm and severe emaciation.

Then, to our absolute surprise, one day when we went to clean Sunny out, we discovered that she had given birth to three tiny hoglets! 🥹

Sadly, only little Cloudy survived, but Sunny proved to be an absolutely fabulous mum. ❤️

Cloudy has absolutely thrived and, with the help of his wonderful foster carer Emma, he got to spend some time safely exploring one of our outdoor runs. He was certainly not impressed by the Scottish weather though — apparently rain is NOT on his list of favourite things! 😂🌧️

We’re so pleased to see both mum and baby heading off to start their next chapter. 🏡🦔

🐾 Charlie & Lucky 🐾

These two brothers were found out during the daytime weighing just 100g.

Charlie was found first, and then, just a day later, little Lucky arrived. It didn’t take us long to realise they were brothers. ❤️

The boys have done incredibly well during their time with us, although they had a little setback along the way when they developed ringworm.

Thankfully, their wonderful foster carer Jennifer did a marvellous job caring for them in one of our runs and tackling that pesky ringworm. 💪🦔

They are now fighting fit, grown beautifully and were ready to head off into the wild together. 🌿

And finally, little Sparky!

Sparky was found out during the daytime in Airdrie, weighing just a tiny amount. He was very small and had a lot of growing to do, but he has absolutely thrived during his time with us.

He was then cared for by our wonderful foster carer Delia, who helped him take those final steps towards independence.

This week she released Sparky into a wonderful, hedgehog-friendly garden, where we hope he’ll have everything he needs to live his best hedgehog life. 🥰🌿

Three stories, lots of ups and downs, and ultimately happy endings. ❤️

A huge thank you to Emma, Jennifer and Delia for opening their homes and giving these little hogs the extra care and space they needed to get ready for release.

🦔🍂 What better way to celebrate our 1 year anniversary than by welcoming a new hog into the rescue! 🍂🦔

Meet Autumn ❤️

Autumn was found lying in the road in Penicuik, where she was being pecked at by a crow. Thankfully, her finder stopped to help and she made her way to Hogamammas.

A huge thank you to our wonderful ambulance driver Jane for going out to collect her and getting her safely to us. 🚑🦔

On arrival, it was clear Autumn has had a very difficult time. She is emaciated, has ringworm, and an infected wound underneath her chin which will need treatment.

Despite everything she has been through, she was absolutely famished and tucked into her dinner with gusto! 🥹❤️

For our first anniversary, we certainly didn’t expect another little life to arrive through the door — but this is exactly why Hogamammas exists.

One year of rescuing, rehabilitating and giving hedgehogs a second chance… and we’re still going! 🦔❤️

🦔💚 HOGAMAMMAS IS ONE! 💚🦔

How on earth has that happened?! 😭 One whole year of Hogamammas Hedgehog Rescue! 🎉

What started as a little rescue in memory of Dad has grown into something I honestly could never have imagined.

And there’s a little story behind the name…

Dad actually coined the name Hogamammas. 🥹🦔

He had built a little hedgehog feeding station and, in true Dad fashion, decided to give it a name — his take on Wagamamas, but for hedgehogs! 😂🦔 He called it Hogamammas, and that little feeding station became the inspiration for everything that followed.

When Dad died, I knew I wanted to keep that name alive. I wanted something of him to carry on, and what better way than to take the little hedgehog project he had created and turn it into something that could help even more of them?

Dad was such a huge part of my life, and losing him left a space that nothing could ever really fill. Hogamammas gave me a way to turn some of that heartbreak into something positive — something that carries his name, his sense of humour and his love of hedgehogs forward.

Every poorly hog that comes through the door, every little life we manage to save, and every hedgehog that eventually waddles back into the wild feels like another little piece of his legacy. ❤️

I often wonder what Dad would make of it all. I can imagine him shaking his head at the chaos, wondering why on earth there are hedgehogs taking over the place — but secretly being incredibly proud. 😂

If someone had told me a year ago that his little feeding station and a silly name he’d come up with would grow into a rescue, I don’t think I would have believed them.

Hogamammas is Dad’s legacy, but it has become so much more than that. It is a rescue, a little community, and a place where tiny lives get a second chance. ❤️

And we’re not stopping there… we have BIG plans for year two! 👀

🏡 Upgrades to the rescue – we need to change to more suitable flooring, fit units and worktops, and improve the setup so we can cater for even more hedgehogs.

📦 A little storeroom – because the generosity of our supporters has been incredible, and we desperately need somewhere to keep all those wonderful donations!

🦔 More foster carers – expanding our foster network means we can help even more hogs. And for those who have enquired about fostering in Peebles… watch this space! 👀 A plan is afoot! 😉

🚑 Dedicated volunteer ambulance drivers – we now have some amazing people willing to help transport hedgehogs where they need to go, which is going to make such a difference.

❤️ And the big one… charity status.

One of our goals for the coming year is applying for charitable status. Hopefully this will allow Hogamammas to grow, become more sustainable and ultimately help even more of Scotland’s prickliest little patients.

And I couldn’t let our first birthday pass without saying a HUGE thank you to my incredible mentor, Dawn from Hogwatch Dumbarton Hedgehog Rescue❤️

Dawn, thank you for all the training, advice, encouragement and support you’ve given me over the past year. Thank you for answering my endless questions, sharing your knowledge and helping me learn how to give these little guys the very best care possible.

Most importantly, thank you for giving me this opportunity in the first place. Without you taking the time to train me, guide me and believe in me, there quite simply wouldn’t be a Hogamammas as we know it today.

I will always be incredibly greatful that you gave me that chance. 🦔❤️

And of course, a massive thank you to everyone who has supported Hogamammas over the last year — whether you’ve donated food, puppy pads, towels, equipment, money, time, shared our posts, fostered, driven a poorly hog, offered advice or simply cheered us on from the sidelines.

💚 A HUGE THANK YOU! 🦔

💔 A sad update on Walter 💔

Sadly, I have some heartbreaking news about our little fighter, Walter.

Walter came into Hogamammas just over a week ago, absolutely covered in ticks. His faecal sample showed Capillaria, Crenosoma and over the last few days he had also started showing more evidence of fluke. On top of that, he was battling severe ringworm and some sort of respiratory infection.

Last night, Walter took a turn for the worse. His breathing became increasingly laboured and clearly took a huge amount of effort. He did rally after a nebuliser session, and was up eating his breakfast this morning but still clearly not right. I decided to take him to the vet. I desperately hoped that perhaps a different antibiotic or some other treatment might give him a chance.

Sadly, although Walter was still eating and had some fight left in him, his respiratory effort remained significant. After examining him and listening to his lungs, which sounded ‘horrendous’, I was advised that even if he did pull through his lungs would be permanently scarred and he would be unlikely to have a full life back in the wild. It was recommended that the kindest thing we could do was let him go.

I’m not going to pretend I’m 100% comfortable with the decision. When you fight so hard for these little creatures, letting them go is incredibly difficult.

But Walter was such a fighter.

Just two days ago, he was chasing me out of his bed because I dared to try and change some of his bedding! 😂 He fought me every step of the way through his treatment, and I honestly think that determination is what kept him going for as long as he did.

I’m very sad today. 😔 Walter had really got under my skin in the short time he was here, and despite everything he was going through, he still had such a little personality.

He deserved the chance to feel better, and we tried everything we reasonably could. But sometimes, loving them means knowing when to stop asking them to fight.

Better to let him go a day too early than a day too late. 🦔💔

Meet Timmy 🦔💔

Timmy arrived late last night from Livingston after being found at the side of the road. We believe he has likely been clipped by a car.

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteer ambulance driver Heather for collecting him and getting him safely to Hogamammas. ❤️

Timmy has clearly suffered blunt force trauma, with several broken spines across his body. He also has a leg injury and was suffering from flystrike.

He was extremely stressed when he arrived and was clearly in pain. I removed the flystrike, gave him pain relief and settled him into his bed. Despite everything he had been through, he tucked straight into his supper 🥹❤️

Timmy will need further diagnostics to assess the extent of his injuries, and we need to raise £150 to cover these investigations. Every donation, no matter how small, will help us get Timmy the care he needs. ❤️🦔

We’ll be keeping a very close eye on him and assessing his injuries as he settles.

🦔🌿 HEDGEHOG RELEASE SITES NEEDED! 🌿🦔

Hogamammas Hedgehog Rescue is looking for safe, suitable gardens across Central Scotland to become release sites for hedgehogs who have completed their rehabilitation and are ready to return to the wild. 🥰

We’re looking for both town/village and rural locations — so please get in touch even if you don’t live in the countryside!

🏡 Our ideal release site will:

* 🦔 Already have visiting wild hedgehogs
* 🌿 Have a suitable garden with shrubs, bushes, natural cover and areas to forage
* 🏠 Have a suitable, safe hedgehog house
* 🐛 Provide a natural environment where a hedgehog can explore and forage
* 🍽️ Be willing to provide supplementary food and fresh water year-round, or for a minimum of 2 weeks after release
* 🦡 Have no badgers living nearby
* ❤️ Be committed to giving our rescued hogs the best possible chance of settling back into the wild

🏠 Don’t have a hedgehog house?
We have a limited number of hedgehog houses available to loan to approved release sites, so please still get in touch if your garden is otherwise suitable.

📸 Pictures of your garden are very welcome when you message us! They’ll really help us assess whether your garden could make a suitable release site.

We particularly need a mixture of locations, including gardens in towns, villages and rural areas, so we can match each hedgehog to the most suitable environment.

All potential release sites will be assessed before being approved, and we’ll provide guidance on feeding and supporting your new spiky visitor. 🥰

A huge thank you to Biggar Dental Practice for seeing my appeal to keep an eye out for any hoglets after Meadow came into the rescue. 🦔💚

Well… it looks like we have another little girl from the same area!

Meet Tallulah, named by her finder, who arrived at Hogamammas today after being found in exactly the same place as Meadow. 🥰

And I think the girls were absolutely delighted to be reunited! 💕

It’s lovely to think that because people are keeping their eyes open and knowing what to look out for, these little ones are getting the help they need. Both girls are supported in the incubator kindly donated by The Cat Hotel fundraising team.
