Slowing down? It might not just be their age 🐾 It's easy to put stiff joints and shorter walks down to getting older. But extra weight is one of the most common reasons pets slow down, and one of the most fixable. Every extra kilo is carried by their hips, knees, elbows and spine with every step. Body fat also releases chemical messengers that keep low-level inflammation simmering, which can make sore joints feel even worse. The good news? Small changes make a real difference. In one study of overweight dogs with arthritis, losing around 6% of their body weight was enough to ease their lameness. For a 30 kg dog, that's less than 2 kg. Not sure if your pet is carrying a little extra? Book a weight and mobility check with our nursing team and we'll help get them back on their paws 💙

🎊 A warm welcome to Dr Lauren Allcock BVetMed MRCVS! 🎊

You may have spotted a new face around the practice. Lauren has joined our vet team, and we're delighted to have her.

🩺 Lauren qualified in 2019 and has worked in both general practice and emergency and critical care. Her main interests are emergency case management and diagnostic work-ups, getting to the bottom of what's making your pet unwell.

🐾 She also has a real soft spot for Cocker Spaniels!

Say hello if you see her about 👋 or book in with Lauren on 01565 337 999.

Part 2: Tao's results are in! 🔬
(Missed Part 1? Scroll back to see how we sampled her lump.)

We scanned Tao's slide and sent it digitally to a specialist pathologist, and her report was back in under 30 minutes.

The result? A histiocytoma, a common, benign skin lump often seen in young dogs. Many histiocytomas clear up on their own within a few months. We'll keep a close eye on Tao's lump, with the option to remove it if it bothers her or doesn't resolve naturally. Great news for Tao and her family! ❤️

If you've spotted a lump on your pet, don't wait to get peace of mind. Call our team on 01565 337 999 or head to knutsfordvetsurgery.co.uk to book an appointment.

Found a lump on your dog? 🐾

Tao, a 7-month-old English Bulldog, came in to see us after her owner noticed a small lump. Many skin lumps turn out to be harmless, but it's always best to get them checked by a vet.

💉 To find out what was going on, we performed a fine-needle aspiration to collect a small sample of cells. The cells were spread onto a slide, stained to highlight their structure, and scanned so a specialist pathologist could examine them.

Want to know the diagnosis? Part 2 lands later today 🔬👇

Small changes at home can make a big difference to your pet's joints 🐾

Pet steps or a gentle ramp up to their favourite sofa or armchair spare stiff, ageing joints the jolt of jumping down. It's a simple, low-cost change that helps senior pets stay comfortable and independent.

Noticed your pet hesitating before a jump, or slowing down on walks? It can be an early sign of arthritis. Call us on 01565 337 999 and we'll take a look.

Did you know that vasectomising a male ferret is actually a brilliant way to protect female ferret health? 🐾 Unlike many other animals, female ferrets ("jills") stay in season continuously until they are mated. A vasectomised male (affectionately known as a "hoblet") allows them to naturally finish their season safely—keeping their body balanced, healthy, and full of energy! Swipe through for a peek behind the scenes with Charlie, Nick, Holly, and Sas to see today’s procedure, right through to a very comfortable recovery. These little ones certainly made the most of their post-procedure nap time in our cozy kennels!
