The Positive Herd Project

The Positive Herd Project The Positive Herd Project aims to improve the welfare of horses through education, particularly of those with complex behavioural problems.

We provide rescue, rehoming and rehabilitation to horses in need, and sanctuary to those which cannot be rehomed. We also offer education on force-free and positive horse training, equine assisted therapy and other therapeutic activities to anyone who feels they would benefit. We have a very strong ethical code, and believe that all horses should be treated with respect, compassion and not subject

to unnecessary pain, fear or suffering. Through our work we hope to change the lives of the horses we meet, and the perceptions of the people they encounter. With a better understanding of the horse's needs and motives we are able to better explain his behaviour, and ethically manage it. This improves the human-horse relationship and ultimately equine welfare. We also create opportunities for people to spend time with our horses and benefit from being around our herd. The Positive Herd Project offers activities where both horses and people can heal, grow and learn together, in an environment that is positive, force-free and non-judgemental. These activities are safe and suitable for people who have no experience of horses.

There's been a lot of changes to our herd, so we thought it would be nice to give you an update of how some of our familiar faces are doing!

First up; Indi and Skittles!
Indi was bought by Beth in 2011 without her even seeing him, other than on a grainy video. He was a thin, lame and terrified youngster, who the dealer admitted to 'battering'. He's been a precious pet ever since and is happiest getting scratches and lots of fuss.

He lives with his friend Skittles and they are inseparable. Skittles came all the way from Kent to Moorsbarrow Lodge Farm after her owners struggled with her behaviour.

Both of these beautiful bays are so precious, and such gentle and sweet souls. They will continue to live out the rest of their lives with each other, getting all the grass, scratches and love that they need and deserve.

Hello there, it's been a while!!

We know that we've been very quiet on social media since we closed down Moorsbarrow Lodge Farm, but we've not totally disappeared.

I want to be really honest with you. Leaving the farm was an incredibly tough time for us all. We'd put all of our energy, money and heart into trying to make The Positive Herd Project a success on that premises, but it was not to be. In the following months we were avidly searching for another place to rent so that we could continue the work of the CIC. We came very close to securing somewhere on several occasions, but for one reason or another this fell through.

We decided then to close down the business in it's current form, and to focus our energies on looking after the horses, and healing from the intense stress and grief we were experiencing.

Although at the time not being able to continue the CIC was devastating, I do believe that things happen for a reason. Looking back now I am so grateful that we didn't sign another lease or continue down the same path. The universe had bigger plans.

We have had chance to learn, reflect, heal and build the foundations of something much more sustainable and aligned with our overall goals and vision. What we are on the verge of being able to achieve and create is set to be more remarkable than even our wildest dreams could have anticipated!

Our continued work over the years; from 'The Pott Shrigley Project' in 2014, through to securing Moorsbarrow Farm in 2020, and even earlier versions which span decades. Each one of these ventures has provided us with a wealth of information and have been a rich learning opportunity. Each time we have been able to get closer to something truly magical.

I just wanted to thank you all for your continued support over the years, and to update you that we are still working behind the scenes to be able to help even more horses and people through our work. This is our ultimate ambition and life's purpose, and we will work tirelessly until it is brought into fruition.

We look forward to sharing this journey with you again!

With love and gratitude, Beth, Rachel and The Positive Herd team.
