OCTOBER NAIL DEEP DIVE
Catching the nail!!
If you've trimmed a dogs nails, its likely you have experienced either cutting close to the pulp, or like I did in this video- actually cut into the pulp.

When ever you are trimming nails, you should always have some trimmex type product or cornflour handy for use if needed, as we know anything can happen whilst trimming nails 😀

OCTOBER NAIL NEEP DIVE

On this video we show 3 methods of restraint for nail trims that we use on regular dogs. (Spicy and red flag dogs in another video 🤣)
Two methods are with my Handy helper Hannah.

The first is 'Air jail'🤣 the dog is held up agaist the body. You will see hannahs arm across the neck, this is to avoid the dog being able to wriggle and reach with their teeth 😬

Then we have the 'floor method' again with the help from Hannah keeping the dog against her and in control of the head.

Finally where if I'm without hannah to restrain I'm most likely to use the grooming table than to ask an owner to hold, because generally owners are too nervous to hold and pass that to the dog.

*I will usually always do long backed dogs on the table.
*I will also start teeth risk dogs on the table too. More on that soon....

OCTOBER NAIL DEEP DIVE

Other than the obvious of cutting through the dog's nail quick and causing it to bleed other possibe reasons a dog may be nervous about having its nails trimmed. Issues may be

🔸️Dog isn't used to being handled.
🔸️Past trauma of handling causing (unintentional)pain ie vets.
🔸️ Handler being particularly nervous of the situation, causing the dog to be anxious.
🔸️The dog could be experiencing undiagnosed pain that we're unaware of because dogs are very stoic.
🔸️ Physical conformation breed features eg short legs.
🔸️Overweight causing joint pain.
🔸️ Nails being too long, they make walking uncomfortable, and as such handling those feet and nails causes stress and anxiety as well.
🔸️Matting or foreign body in the foot.
🔸️Age/elderly sensitivity.

Our next post will cover different techniques we use in our nail clinics.

DEEP DIVE NAIL MONTH :

When we look closely at the end of the nail, there are different structures that help guide us when trimming.

Nail wall – The hard outer shell of the nail made of hard keratin.

Nail sole – The underside of the nail usually slightly softer keratin.

Nail pulp – Live tissue which contains the nerve endings and blood vessels within the nail.

By recognising these little differences it is really helpful when deciding how much nail can safely be removed — particularly with dark nails, where we can’t simply see through the nail wall.

This is also why nail trimming isn’t always about taking off a big chunk in one go (I did with the right image) Sometimes working the nail clippers around the nail taking tiny sliver amounts is best ( I did with the left image).

In the picture are two different nail shapes and were trimmed very differently.

When it comes to nails, they definitely aren’t all created equal!

Here are the date and times for the upcoming clinics, and I thought it would be a really good month to do a deep dive into all things nail care!

Not just what me and Hannah do in the nail clinics, but to show you why not all nails are created equally.

We'll go through some success stories that we've had working through desensitising dogs to have their nails trimmed, if you've been in during September's clinics you WILL have heard Georgie and jolene🙉🙉 but after their 3rd visit made huge progress 🥰

Plus also follow along with me getting maintenance work done on my own dogs, because very much like thier grooming, they always get left till last 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
