https://www.gov.scot/news/bluetongue-movement-rules-updated/

Scottish government have updated the rules on livestock movements from the temporary control zone to the freezone of Scotland after 10th September when the vector low risk period is due to begin. Non pregnant livestock including store lambs and cattle will no longer need to be vaccinated pre movement. There will still be some restrictions on pregnant cows and heifers and entire bulls and tups.
We will keep you posted as further developments emerge.
Vaccination of breeding animals remains the most effective way of preventing the effects of the disease on your farm.

Restrictions eased in the Southwest Scotland BTV zone.

We are holding four local Bluetongue update meetings across Dumfries & Galloway this week. With the BTV-3 situation continuing to develop and a Temporary Control Zone now in place, we will share the latest information, explain what it means for your business, outline what we are pressing for and answer questions from attendees.

Meetings will take place at:

β€’ Monday 24 August, 7pm – Cressfield Hotel, Ecclefechan
β€’ Tuesday 25 August, 7pm – Dumfries Auction Mart
β€’ Wednesday 26 August, 7pm – Wallets Mart, Castle Douglas
β€’ Thursday 27 August, 7pm – Wigtownshire Rugby Club

All farmers and crofters in the area are welcome, whether NFU Scotland members or not. There is no need to book, and non-members can find out more about our work and how to add their voice to NFU Scotland.

Hear directly from NFU Scotland on what we know, the latest position from the Scottish Government, what NFUS is pressing for and what happens next. Local auctioneers and veterinary practices will also join us to provide practical updates and answer questions.

A general licence has now been issued allowing livestock to move between holdings within the temporary control zone, essentially permitting movements between holdings in D&G.
This licence does not apply to any holding with confirmed or suspected Bluetongue Cases

Due to rising cases of Bluetongue 3 across the region APHA have placed Dumfries and Galloway into a temporary control zone. Ruminant livestock will not be able to move from holdings within the TCZ except direct to slaughter.
Further licences for movement within the TCZ or into the restricted zone (England and Wales) may be forthcoming but have not yet been issued.

As we prepare for what promises to be a brilliant day, we would once again like to recognise Galloway Vets, one of our Principal Sponsors of the Whistle-Stop Tour of the West.

Serving the Stewartry since 1867, Galloway Vets has a long-standing connection with the local farming community. Their experienced farm team works closely with livestock producers, providing practical herd and flock health support focused on preventative medicine, fertility, animal health, welfare and productivity.
We are extremely grateful to everyone at Galloway Vets for their generous support. The backing of businesses with such strong links to agriculture and the livestock industry plays an important part in making events like the Whistle-Stop Tour possible.

πŸ“ On Saturday, our fully booked tour will visit four outstanding Salers herds – Traboyack, Cuil, Rusko and Girthon – demonstrating the versatility of the breed across a range of farming systems and bringing together breeders, commercial producers and friends of the breed.

***BTV3 update***

The first case of Bluetongue 3 virus in Scotland has been confirmed in Dumfries and Galloway. Please be vigilant for the signs of BTV 3 in cattle and sheep and get in touch if you have any suspicions.

Unfortunately due to overwhelming demand in recent weeks there is no vaccine available at present. If you have any concerns about livestock movement please get in touch with one of the vets.

Here at Galloway Vets we are proud to support and the fantastic work our farming community does every day!
