What can you use for feline intubation when Intubeaze isn't available?

This week's tip comes from Tyfane Yamaoka BVSc, MRCVS, Residency-Trained through the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia (ECVAA), one of the anaesthesia clinicians available through Veterinary Specialist Advice.

Tyfane's recommendation is to use preservative-free lidocaine applied directly to the larynx prior to intubation.

Key reminders:

โœ”๏ธ Keep the total dose below 2mg/kg
โœ”๏ธ Wait approximately 30 seconds before attempting intubation
โœ”๏ธ Consider preparing multiple syringes in advance to reduce wastage
โœ”๏ธ An atomiser may help reduce laryngeal stimulation in sensitive patients

This week's paper reviewed 70 dogs with primary mediastinal lymphoma and found:

๐Ÿ”น No significant survival difference between anthracycline-based and lomustine-based protocols
๐Ÿ”น 97.9% objective response rate
๐Ÿ”น CD4/CD8 immunophenotypes may provide valuable prognostic information
๐Ÿ”น Hypercalcaemia was associated with improved progression-free survival

In this week's VSA Journal Club, we review a recent case series investigating the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) during external splint placement for pectus excavatum correction.

The authors explored whether direct visualisation of intrathoracic structures could reduce the risk of iatrogenic injury associated with traditional blind circumsternal suture placement. The results were encouraging, but also highlighted several important limitations and technical challenges.
