💧 Let’s Talk Hydration & Ageing Jumping Spiders 🕷️
As our jumping spiders get older, it’s completely normal for them to slow down a little. You may notice they’re less active, spend more time resting, or become slightly less enthusiastic about hunting than they were in their younger days.
One thing that can really help older spiders is making sure they stay well hydrated. A small boost of hydration and energy can sometimes make a noticeable difference.
For healthy younger spiders, honey water generally isn’t necessary unless they’re showing signs of dehydration. Signs to look out for include:
🔹 A shrunken abdomen
🔹 The back of the abdomen appearing flat or wrinkled
🔹 Lethargy alongside a reduced appetite
Sometimes simply misting the enclosure isn’t enough, especially if a spider is already dehydrated. In these cases, you can offer:
🍉 A tiny piece of watermelon for extra moisture
🍯 A small amount of honey diluted with water on the end of a cotton bud (Q-tip)
Remember, only a tiny amount is needed. These should be used as an occasional boost rather than a regular food source.
As always, prevention is best. Providing fresh water (and I don’t mean a dish) appropriate humidity, and good husbandry will help keep your spiders healthy throughout their lives.
Here is a beautiful example of Romeo my gorgeous
Hyllus Diardi make enjoying some honey water on the end of a Q-Tip. He’s had me sat here for five minutes already.😂 this is the first time he’s ever had it or ever needed it. He has been mature for quite some time now and I’m just starting to notice him slow down ever so slightly.🥰❤️
