In 1999, workers at a copper mine in southern Arizona reportedly discovered something extraordinary hidden inside a piece of solid copper. It was a scorpion, with its claws, legs, and curved tail preserved in remarkable detail.
The unusual specimen attracted attention because it looked as though the tiny desert creature had been trapped inside the metal. Rather than being discarded as an ordinary mineral sample, it was preserved and examined by people interested in its unusual formation.
The discovery later drew attention at the 2019 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, where visitors could see the remarkable specimen. One explanation offered for its formation was that copper rich fluids gradually deposited minerals around the scorpion, preserving its shape over time.
However, without reliable documentation of the specimen's origin and formation, the exact circumstances behind the discovery remain uncertain.
