SEVEN trainers. Still no answers.
Today I met a lady who has previously worked with seven different dog trainers.
Seven.
Despite all that time, money and effort, nobody had ever properly explained why her dog was reactive. Nobody had ever sat down and discussed the role of fear, confidence, stress responses, or even the basics of the four quadrants of learning.
To be honest, I found that quite shocking.
The reality is that if we don't understand why a dog is behaving a certain way, we're often just treating symptoms rather than addressing the root cause.
In this case, it became apparent very quickly that fear was playing a significant role in the dog's behaviour.
What made today particularly encouraging was that despite being let down so many times before, this owner hasn't given up. She's already putting in a huge amount of work herself and the heel work she's achieved is fantastic. That level of commitment is exactly what creates long-term success.
Understandably, after seven trainers, there's a lack of trust. I don't blame her for that at all.
My job now isn't just to help the dog. It's to help rebuild confidence in the training process itself.
Will it happen overnight? No.
Can we make significant improvements with consistency, structure and the right plan? Absolutely.
This is why choosing the right trainer matters. Not somebody who simply tells you what to do, but somebody who helps you understand why you're doing it.
Have you lost faith in dog trainers?
Do you feel like you've spent money but never really been given the support or explanations you needed?
