💉Bluetongue Virus (BTV) Vaccine Update💉
We have some Bluevacc Bluetongue Vaccine AVAILABLE TODAY. Please ☎01548 853322 (Option 2) if you have not ordered yours.
We urge all farmers to ensure their sheep AND cattle (goats & alpacas which is off licence) are vaccinated as it can dramatically reduce the clinical signs of the disease. 🐑🐄🦙🐐
Vaccination remains the best way to protect livestock, but supply is limited, with most products currently out of stock.
Please remember laboratory confirmation can take 1-2 weeks and so the results published by APHA have quite a delay. We are still testing daily for suspected cases and there are several thousand suspected cases in the UK (despite official figures only suggesting hundreds.)

Those farmers who have allocated vaccine please could you ensure it is collected as soon as possible 🙏

💙 Looking After Yourself During the BTV Outbreak

We understand the concerns and pressures BTV can place on farmers, their livestock and their businesses. Outbreaks can be stressful and isolating, so please don’t feel you have to face them alone.

Ask friends, family or neighbours for help, and contact us for advice on managing cases and flocks. Organisations such as RABI and The Farming Community Network are also there to support farmers with the mental toll these situations can bring.

By working together, sharing information and supporting vaccination, we can help protect livestock and reduce the impact of BTV.

⚠️ Bluetongue is a notifiable disease

👮‍♂️ If you suspect BTV you must report it immediately. Failure to do so is an offence.

📞 In England, report suspected cases to APHA on 03000 200 301.

🩺 When you call, an APHA duty vet will discuss the clinical signs with you. If Bluetongue cannot be ruled out, they will provide an authorisation code for us to submit samples

🧪 APHA funds laboratory testing for up to three affected animals on suspected holdings. Please note that while the laboratory testing is funded, the costs of sample collection and postage remain the responsibility of the livestock owner

🚨 What to do if you suspect Bluetongue Virus (BTV)

If you suspect BTV in your livestock:

📞 Contact our farm team immediately.

🏠 House affected animals in a clean, dry environment where they can be closely monitored and treated. If housing isn’t possible, consider marking affected animals so they can be easily identified and monitored.

👀 Monitor animals closely for any changes in their condition

💊 Provide supportive care - While there is no specific treatment for BTV, supportive treatment can help improve welfare and recovery. Our farm vets will advise on the most appropriate treatment and management, following the latest evidence and current guidance.

🌛✨Remember, we provide our own dedicated out-of-hours service, so one of our farm vets is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

⚠️ Bluetongue is a notifiable animal disease. If you suspect BTV, you must report it immediately (03000 200 301)

🦟 Preventing Bluetongue (BTV)

There are several simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk of BTV on your farm:

✅ Vaccinate your livestock – the most effective way to reduce disease severity and help limit spread.
✅ Stay vigilant for signs of disease.
✅ Maintain good farm biosecurity.
✅ Reduce midge expose by;

🏠 House animals where possible at dawn and dusk, when biting midges are most active.
🌿 Avoiding grazing wet ground or areas near water.
💨 Grazing livestock in breezier fields where possible.
🐑 Delaying shearing sheep where appropriate, while balancing the risk of fly strike.

‼️ Please note: The recent increase in BTV cases has led to exceptionally high demand for vaccines, resulting in a national shortage.
