Earlier this week, we welcomed the team from Virtual Veterinary Specialists to Mill House Vets to set up and demonstrate their new system.

This technology will allow us to perform ultrasound scans while working remotely with veterinary specialists from around the world. It means pets can benefit from specialist-interpreted scans here at the practice, helping reduce the need for extra travel where appropriate.

As part of the demonstration, we needed a very willing patient to practise on, so RVN Henry kindly put Pepper forward. She was as good as gold throughout, and we are very happy to say her heart looked healthy!

🌾 Beware of Dried Grass and Foxtails This Summer 🌾

As the weather warms up, dried grass seeds and foxtails become a common hazard for our pets.

These sharp, arrow-shaped seeds can easily attach to your dog or cat’s fur and work their way into sensitive areas such as:
🐾 Between the toes and paw pads
👃 Nostrils
👂 Ears
👁 Eyes
🦴 Under the skin and coat

Once embedded, grass seeds can migrate through tissues, causing pain, infection, abscesses and, in some cases, requiring surgery to remove.

Signs to watch for include:
• Sudden sneezing or nosebleeds
• Excessive licking or chewing at paws
• Head shaking or ear scratching
• Swelling, redness or discharge
• Squinting or eye irritation

How to help protect your pet:
✅ Avoid long, dry grass and overgrown areas during walks
✅ Check your pet thoroughly after every walk, especially paws, ears, eyes and coat
✅ Keep fur around paws, ears and between toes neatly trimmed if appropriate
✅ Remove any visible seeds carefully before they become embedded
✅ Seek veterinary advice promptly if you notice any of the signs above

Early detection can prevent serious complications. If you are concerned that your pet may have picked up a grass seed, please contact Mill House Vets for advice.
