I’ve spent a lot of time worrying that I’m not doing enough with my dogs while they’re here❤️ So, I decided to plan a little weekend getaway specifically for them, and we headed off to Slatehouse Cottage in Thornhill.
It was the perfect place, especially for reactive / nervous dogs. There are no nearby houses, hardly any dogs or people around, and loads of private grounds to explore and sniff🐾A lot of dogs would absolutely LOVE it.
But this weekend taught me something really important about my own dogs. Although they had all this space and freedom, they also spent a surprising amount of time displaying stress signals. The extra bags in the car, travelling, the change in routine, unfamiliar surroundings and simply sleeping somewhere new all had an impact. They didn’t sleep properly, and Mango became extremely clingy to me.
It really made me think about all those beautiful photos and videos we see online of people taking their dogs on amazing adventures, road trips, holidays and weekend breaks. It can be so easy to think that we should be doing the same, that giving our dogs these big experiences is somehow what makes us a good dog owner.
But actually, not every dog wants or needs a grand holiday.
Some dogs would thrive on a weekend like this, but some dogs would probably be happiest staying at home, sleeping in their own bed, following their normal routine and having a quiet day sniffing around their usual walks🥹
This weekend wasn’t a failure. Quite the opposite. It gave me a much better understanding of what MY dogs actually need.
Sometimes, doing enough for our dogs doesn’t mean doing more.
I will post more about this venue in my members group this week for anyone that is looking for a getaway with their dogs as it was STUNNING and very dog-friendly! 😍
