🌾🌽THE GREAT GRAIN FREE DEBATE...🌽🌾
Let's start at the beginning, the very beginning.
Dogs have been our steadfast companions for approximately 10,000 years. While we can't be certain, it's largely believed that man and wolf developed a cooperative relationship based around complementary dietary needs and mutual protection.
Now, before anyone reaches for their keyboard, our domestic dogs are not wolves. Selective breeding and cultural development have produced thousands of variations of "dog" across the globe. Very few still resemble wolves... until you get down to the finer details.
Wolves and domestic dogs still share three major physical hallmarks that earn them both the classification of "facultative carnivores" (meat eaters by preference, adaptable in times of want/need).
1. The scissor bite. Canines jaw bones operate on a swinging motion across a single axis- ideal for smashing up and down on meat and bone, not great for breaking down fibre.
Herbivores like cattle (and omnivores like yours truly) have lateral motion in their jaws, and flatter rear molars for grinding up fibre and vegetable matter (picture the slack jawed, circular movements cows make while chewing).
Think guillotine vs pestal and mortar. Both effective, but both with their own design brief.
2. The Stomach. Carnivores have seriously strong stomach acid- peaking at pH 1 or 2. Although bone and meat might seem harder to break down in theory, the canine pancreas has it all in hand.
A powerful little enzyme call protease is released when food enters the stomach- seeking out and breaking down protein chains. This is also the first time your dog's food will encounter amylase, the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates.
This is where Herbivores and Omnivores have a huge advantage. They have amylase in their saliva, kick starting the digestion process from the moment starchy foods enter our mouths.
In both cases, once everything is nicely mushed into one big lump (called a bolus), it makes its way down the production line for final processing...
3. The Intestines. Herbivores have loooooong intestines, giving the body plenty of time to break down and ferment any starches, ready for conversion into energy.
Dogs, not so much. Their intestines are short. The job gets done quickly or not at all (which is why most dry fed dogs will have softer stool and excess gas- but that's a story for another time).
Whether we like it or not, our dogs are born to eat meat. Not grain, not meat derivatives, hearty whole cuts of meat.
Grain free as a concept is as old as the species itself. As a marketing slogan? Well that's when things get tricky.
Just because something is "grain free" doesn't mean it's biologically suitable for our dogs.
If we remove the grain- but replace it with starches, legumes and other fillers that don't meet our dog's dietary needs- then they're no better off than they were before.
Imagine hiring an architect to design and build your dream home. At the end they turn to you and say
"Don't worry, we haven't used any lead based paint... But there is a teeny, tiny amount of asbestos in the walls"
You wouldn't feel very reassured.
It's a similar story with "complete" foods. Saying your house is "complete" isn't very comforting if they didn't connect your pipes and wires to the national grid before they left.
Complete foods can be made with grain or without, as long as the nutritional analysis meets the target, the spreadsheet doesn't care. But your dog's body does.
Over the years, you've probably heard some Chinese whisper or another about grain free and heart problems in dogs (specifically DCM, or dilated cardiomyopathy).
Not many people challenge it, it benefited a lot of traditional pet feed companies who were losing ground to updated alternatives, but it was actually never proven- even though the FDA tried really, really hard.
The truth behind the marketing claim comes down to this..
In 2018, the FDA announced an investigation into claims of DCM caused by "grain free" diets.
In late 2022, the investigation was archived- no further updates would be released unless there was a significant change of circumstances.
In four years, the FDA never found a causal link. The suspicion remains that excessive levels of legume or potato products might alter digestive responses in "atypical dogs". Basically if you feed irregular diets full of irregular ingredients to irregular dogs, you're going to get irregular results (and I say that as the loving owner of two very irregular dogs)
I appreciate none of this is particularly comforting. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Singular, coverall labels like "grain free", "natural" or "veterinary endorsed" are attention grabbing headlines designed to sell pet foods to busy pet owners. They are not the whole story.
Your dog's body- their anatomy, their physiology, every hormone and enzyme plays a part in their responses to food. To understand whether a particular diet is actually right for them, you need to look further than a label on a packet.
