🐴 Bot flies 🪰

Vet Nicky spotted some strange flecks on her horse's legs today and inspired us all to post! Have you ever spotted similar small white/yellow eggs stuck to your horse's hair over the summer? There is a good chance you could be looking at some Bot Fly eggs!

Bot flies lay their eggs on the horse's hair, most commonly around the legs, shoulders, and face. Horses may try to bite or lick at the areas where the flies are bothering them and sometimes accidently ingest a few!

So what can you do?

🪰 Remove the eggs – daily grooming and checks can help reduce bot eggs. Using a bot egg remover or bot knife can be useful for getting those stubborn little eggs off the hairs, taking care around sensitive areas such as the face.

🪰 Removing eggs regularly can help reduce the number of larvae your horse swallows while grooming.

🪰 Bot flies can be a nuisance, but seeing a few eggs on your horse doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem. A quick check during grooming can help keep on top of them throughout the fly season.

🪰 In some cases, larvae can be found incidentally during a gastroscope exam as seen in our picture! This would then prompt treatment with a good worming protocol from our vets to ensure the right wormer is used.

We had a lovely (if somewhat noisy!) visitor to Syke Farm last week.

Bluebell came to vet Jamie for a pregnancy scan. It was suspected she was pregnant but the blood test available is not validated in donkeys and Bluebell is too small for traditional transrectal ultrasound to detect pregnancy.

Transabdominal pregnancy diagnosis (like in humans) is rarely performed especially in bigger equids as with such large gastrointestinal tracts it can be very difficult to see a fetus.

Bluebell was such a brilliant patient and Jamie managed to get some great images of a very lively donkey foal wriggling around in there!

There will definitely be a fight for which vet gets to go and do the new born foal check when he or she finally arrives.

With rain forecast and the warmer conditions means a fresh growth of grass in our area. 💦☀️

❗️Increasing the laminitis risk.

Consider limiting grazing, soaking hay and muzzling to prevent weight gain.

It is good practice to monitor your horse's weight with a weigh tape, this allows you to adjust hay/feed/grass consumption and increase exercise if a gain in weight is recorded.

Please call the practice to chat to one of our team if you worry that your horse or pony is at risk and we can chat through some management options.

If you suspect even the earliest signs of laminitis, you should call us.

Clinical Director Nicky had a great night talking to the kids at Eglinton Hunt Pony Club last week about all things equine dentistry! Safe to say some of the questions definitely kept her on her toes!

For those of you who know Sheona, one of the yard team that takes such great care of the inpatients at our Syke Farm site, it will come as no surprise that her Highland cows at home are truly spoilt! They love this fan set up she has made for them!
