We have our 2027 calendar cover star! 🎉🐾

Congratulations to Ruby, whose wonderful photograph received the most votes in our public cover competition.

Thank you to everyone who entered, voted and shared the competition. The response has made this year’s calendar feel like a genuine celebration of our local pet community.

Our A4 wall calendars will cost £10, with £5 from every calendar sold donated to Small Animal Rescue.

We’re now completing the design and arranging printing. You can pre-order your calendars now at https://pawsitivevetcare.co.uk/2027-calendar

Well done, Ruby—we think you’ll look fantastic on the cover!

Is your puppy suddenly chewing everything in sight?

Most puppies begin losing their baby teeth at around three to four months of age, with their adult teeth continuing to emerge over the following few months.

During this stage you may notice:

🐾 More chewing than usual
🐾 Small teeth on the floor—or no teeth at all, because many are swallowed
🐾 Slightly sore gums
🐾 A little blood on a toy
🐾 A temporary change in breath

Offer safe, puppy-appropriate things to chew and avoid very hard objects that could damage the developing adult teeth.

It is also worth beginning gentle mouth handling now. Briefly lift your puppy’s lip, reward them and stop before they become uncomfortable. This can make toothbrushing and future veterinary examinations much easier.

Occasionally a baby tooth remains in place after the adult tooth has erupted. These retained teeth can cause crowding and trap debris, so please ask us to check if you notice two teeth occupying the same position.

Meet the stars of our 2027 Pawsitive Vet Care calendar! 🐾📅

Thank you to everyone who entered. We loved seeing so many dogs, cats, and a real variety of other pets from across our community.

After a great deal of discussion, our team has chosen the photographs for the twelve month pages:

January — Jasper
February — Betty Boo
March — Stew Pot, Bunny Pie and Nola the Destroyer!
April — Goblin
May — Coco and Buster
June — Gertrude, Dyllis and Phyllis
July — Jessie
August — Milly Mildred Muttage
September — Mars
October — Millie
November — Chester
December — Patrick Swayze

Now we need your help to choose the front cover.

We’ve selected 4 portrait-format finalists. To vote, react to your favourite photograph in the comments beneath this original post. Only reactions received before 15:00 on Monday 12th October will be counted.

The finished A4 wall calendars will cost £10, with £5 from every sale donated to Greatfield Small Animal Rescue

Good luck to all our cover finalists!

A tooth can look fairly normal above the gumline while hiding painful disease underneath.

That’s why every dental COHAT at Pawsitive Vet Care includes full-mouth dental X-rays.

COHAT stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. It involves much more than removing visible tartar. While your pet is under anaesthetic, we examine and chart the whole mouth, probe around the teeth, take X-rays of every tooth and clean above and below the gumline.

Dental X-rays can reveal problems including:

🐾 Bone loss around tooth roots
🐾 Painful tooth resorption in cats
🐾 Infection beneath the gumline
🐾 Fractured or damaged roots
🐾 Abnormally developed or unerupted teeth

Without X-rays, these conditions can be missed. We believe a dental assessment should investigate the whole tooth—not only the part we can see.

If you’re concerned about your pet’s mouth, we’re offering free nurse dental health checks throughout October.

Chelsea is braving the big chop! ✂️

She has been growing her hair and will be donating it to the The Little Princess Trust , which provides real-hair wigs free of charge to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Donating the hair is only part of the process. It costs the charity an average of £700 to make, fit and style each wig, so Chelsea is also raising money to help turn that donated hair into something a young person can wear with confidence.

If you’d like to support her, you can:

💜 Make a cash donation using the collection box in our reception
💜 Donate through Chelsea’s JustGiving page:

https://justgiving.com/page/chels-tans-2

Every contribution, however small, will help Chelsea support this wonderful service.

We’re very proud of her—and can’t wait to see the new hairstyle! Please join us in wishing Chelsea luck and helping her raise as much as possible for the Little Princess Trust.

Firework season may still feel a little way off, but now is the time to start preparing.

If your pet finds fireworks frightening, putting a plan in place before the first loud bangs can make a real difference.

You can begin by:

🐾 Creating a quiet, comfortable hiding place
🐾 Encouraging your pet to use it with treats, toys or familiar bedding
🐾 Closing curtains and playing gentle background sound
🐾 Checking that microchip details and identification tags are current
🐾 Plugging in any recommended calming diffusers in advance
🐾 Walking dogs during daylight once displays begin

Sound recordings can help some animals when introduced very quietly and gradually. If your pet becomes worried, stop rather than continuing in the hope that they’ll “get used to it”.

Pets with significant firework fear may need a more individual plan, including prescription medication. Please contact us early so we have time to discuss the options—waiting until fireworks have already started makes it much harder to prepare properly.

Does your pet’s mouth need a closer look?

Throughout October, we’re offering free nurse dental health checks for dogs and cats.

During the appointment, one of our nursing team will:

🐾 Look at the visible teeth and gums
🐾 Check for plaque, tartar, redness and other obvious concerns
🐾 Ask about signs you may have noticed at home
🐾 Discuss suitable home dental care
🐾 Explain the next step if further assessment or treatment may be needed

A conscious check cannot show us everything happening beneath the gumline, but it is a useful starting point—and there’s no obligation to proceed with treatment.

Bad breath, red gums, difficulty chewing and visible tartar are all good reasons to arrange a check. Pets can also have dental disease without showing obvious discomfort.

To book a free nurse dental check during October, please contact the practice on 01299 333335 or visit our website.

The appointment includes a general health and wellbeing discussion, weight and body-condition assessment, blood-pressure check and urine testing.

If your older pet is slowing down, drinking more, changing weight—or simply hasn’t had a health check recently—this is a useful opportunity to see how they’re doing.

Please call us on 01299 333335 today to ask about remaining availability.
